CELEBRATE FAMILY HISTORY MONTH -- OCTOBER 2025

Wherever you are in your genealogy journey--just starting out or years down the road--find resources and community in societies, libraries, archives and museums. Explore the benefits of organizations where you can add to your research skills and family tree, experience the joy of discoveries, and meet people who share your passion for family history.

Participating with organizations makes genealogy a rewarding pursuit. It could even enhance your mental sharpness and social life, which studies suggest could be linked to health as we age.

CELEBRATE FAMILY HISTORY MONTH -- OCTOBER 2025

Organize Your Photos

Photos bring family history to life and are priceless parts of any family history collection. They can transport you back in time and capture an ancestor's essence in a way no other genealogy record can.

However, they are one of the items most likely to deteriorate over time, and they require careful, thoughtful care. It is easy to let them pile up rather than see to it they are stored and preserved properly.

Tackle those towering boxes of photos this month. Start by surveying your collections and identifying who owned the photos before you. Sort them. Scan them, then store in archival-safe sleeves and boxes. If you don't want the prints yourself, try to find family members who might.

Once your photos are digitized, don't let them be disorganized either. Create specific file names, sensible folder structure and regular backups.

Family History Month was established to encourage individuals to learn about their ancestry and the stories of their family members. It serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding one's roots and the impact of family history on personal identity. The observance began in 2001 when Congress passed a resolution to promote the search for family roots, emphasizing that by doing so, we come closer together as a human family.

How will you celebrate? There are many ways to be intentional about connecting with or researching your ancestors this month. Here are three ideas.

1. Make a Family Recipe
Making and enjoying recipes that have been in your family for generations is a perfect way to channel your family history during Family History Month.

2. Engage in an Activity You Enjoyed with Your Grandparents
What kinds of activities remind you of your grandparents? Celebrate Family History Month by doing that activity!

3. Learn More About Researching Your Family
Family History Month is the perfect time to learn more about researching your family. The Meade County Genealogical Society is ready to help you.

National Save Your Photos Day is celebrated annually on the last Saturday in September. Created by the Save Your Photos Alliance, the day reminds us that photos – whether printed or digital – are fragile and can be misplaced, damaged by disasters or lost through computer viruses. Many genealogists have inherited boxes of Polaroids and albums with unlabeled faces and dates; without action, these memories could disappear. Take this day as an opportunity to protect your personal history and ensure that family stories live on.
