Mrs. Smith and Dr. Kerby delivered our Portrait of a Jackson County Learner banner today, and we are very excited to begin highlighting these important skills throughout our school! 🐯🖤💛
The Portrait of a Learner is about preparing students for much more than a test. It focuses on the knowledge, skills, and mindsets students need to be successful in school, in their future careers, and in life.
Our District Portrait is especially meaningful because it reflects our community and what Jackson County believes is important for our students. Through community meetings and conversations, educators, families, community members, and other stakeholders had opportunities to discuss and share their input on an important question: What do we want a graduate of Jackson County Public Schools to know and be able to do when they leave us?
Those conversations helped identify the qualities and skills we want to develop in our students from the time they enter our schools until the day they graduate. This community centered approach is consistent with Kentucky’s Portrait of a Learner work, which is intended to create a shared vision of the skills and dispositions students need beyond traditional academic measures.
For Jackson County, our Portrait identifies six qualities we want to develop in every student:
⭐ Effective Communicator — communicates clearly, listens actively, works positively with others, and values different perspectives.
⭐ Community Contributor — shows empathy and respect, acts with integrity, serves others, and takes pride in their community.
⭐ Resilient Achiever — perseveres through challenges, builds confidence, follows through on goals, and learns from experiences.
⭐ Reliable Worker — takes initiative, demonstrates responsibility and accountability, has a strong work ethic, and follows through.
⭐ Innovative Problem-Solver — thinks critically, demonstrates curiosity and creativity, applies knowledge to new situations, and uses technology responsibly.
⭐ Lifelong Learner — develops important life skills, explores future careers, adapts to change, and continues learning and growing.
At Sand Gap Elementary, we know our responsibility goes far beyond teaching reading, math, science, and social studies. Academic achievement will always be important, but we also want our Tigers to leave us with the character, confidence, work ethic, and skills they need to succeed wherever life takes them!
Someday, the students walking our halls today will be the employees, business owners, parents, leaders, and neighbors who make Jackson County a great place to call home. We want our Tigers to grow up to be successful contributors to their communities and to be prepared to do great things!
That preparation starts early. The strong academic and personal foundation our students receive right here at the Gap helps prepare them for middle school, high school, graduation, and everything that comes afterward.
We aren’t just preparing our Tigers for the next grade—we’re preparing them for their future. 🐯🖤💛
