On April 10-11, committee members of the Pony Express 120 Gravel Dash were proud to take part in the Flint Hills Gravel Ride and Run & Expo in Americus.

On Friday, we enjoyed promoting our event at the Expo and giving away a set of Panaracer tires in their sharp new British Racing Green color. Committee members also pitched in to help event organizer Bobby Thompson with registration, giveaway tables, and even route recon after all the recent rain.

Saturday brought beautiful weather for riding, and several of our members were able to join the action as riders and checkpoint volunteers.

We’re always grateful for opportunities to support fellow events, connect with the gravel community, and share the excitement for the Pony Express 120 Gravel Dash. 🚴‍♂️🌾

🚨📣 IMPORTANT RACE UPDATE 📣🚨

After extensive discussion at last night’s meeting, the Pony Express 120 Gravel Dash Committee has officially approved a bold new rule for this year’s event:

🐎 All riders will be required to complete 15 miles of the course on horseback.

Yes, you read that right. Gravel meets gallop.

To keep things fair and authentic:
• Horses will be provided at designated “Saddle Stations” along the route
• Clip-in pedals will not be compatible (we tried… the horses objected)
• Riders are encouraged to practice their “YEEHAW” for optimal performance
• Helmets are still required… cowboy hats optional but highly respected

We believe this change honors the true spirit of the Pony Express while also answering the age-old question: “What if my bike had feelings and hooves?”

Please begin adjusting your training plans accordingly. Interval workouts may now include:
🚴➡️🐎 transitions
Hay bale agility drills
Emotional bonding with your assigned horse

Long before GPS tracks and group rides, the Pony Express Trail carried riders across the plains with urgency, grit, and an unrelenting sense of purpose. For 18 months in 1860–61, mail couriers raced these corridors on horseback, connecting a growing nation across vast distances and unforgiving terrain.

This week’s route traces that legacy — a reminder that these roads have always been about movement and endurance.

And with daylight stretching a little longer, there’s no better time to ride into the evening.
