Whether you're reporting a maintenance issue, giving notice to move out, asking a question about your lease, or discussing rent, keeping important communication in writing can help protect everyone involved.
A written record creates a timeline of what was discussed, when it was reported, and any responses you received. If there's ever confusion or a disagreement, you'll have documentation to refer back to.

Examples of conversations you should keep in writing:
✔ Maintenance and repair requests
✔ Notice to move in or move out
✔ Questions about your lease
✔ Rent payment arrangements
✔ Requests for permission (such as adding a pet or making changes to the apartment)
✔ Concerns about neighbors or safety issues

When possible:
📧 Use email, text messages, or your landlord's resident portal.
📸 Take photos if there's damage or a maintenance concern.
📅 Save your messages and any responses you receive.

Keeping communication in writing helps reduce misunderstandings, creates a clear record, and makes it easier to follow up if needed.
