Our Pet Food Pantry Program has always been a bit of a trial and error process. We are constantly looking at what is working, what is not, and how we can make the program work best for both our community and our nonprofit.
Over the past month, it became clear that the way our pantries were operating was not sustainable and was not allowing us to help as many families as we would like. With limited food and limited nonprofit funds, we needed to make some changes.
Our Pet Food Pantries are now application-based and will remain locked. Anyone needing assistance will first need to complete an application through our website. Once approved, you will receive instructions for accessing the pantry and picking up your food.
We understand that some people may be disappointed by this change, while others may feel it is a better system. Our goal is not to make receiving assistance more difficult. We are simply trying to make sure the food available is being distributed to as many families and pets in need as possible, while keeping the program sustainable with the resources we have.
Please do not visit a pantry before you have been approved and received your pickup instructions. The businesses and organizations where our pantries are located are generously allowing us to use their space, but they do not operate the pantries and will not have information about applications, approvals, or access. We are also always grateful for physical donations of dog and cat food. Since the pantries are now locked, physical donations will need to be picked up by one of our volunteers or dropped off directly with a member of our team. Message us and we’ll be happy to coordinate!
Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared our program, volunteered, hosted a pantry, or helped us figure out how to make this resource better. We are learning as we go, and every change we make is with the goal of helping this program reach more pets and families throughout Southern Illinois.
