Myth vs. Reality: Poverty and SNAP Benefits

There are many ideas about who uses SNAP (also known as food stamps). One common idea is that people who receive SNAP are not working or are taking advantage of public benefits.

The reality is more complicated. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities:
• 35% of SNAP recipients in Ohio are in working families.
• 62% of SNAP recipients in Ohio are in families with children.
• 43% of SNAP recipients in Ohio are in families with older adults or are disabled.

Many of the people we serve rely on SNAP and other public benefits to help make ends meet. They are working hard to support themselves and their families while facing the everyday challenges that can make life difficult.

At Marion Matters, we believe in building long-term stability and self-sufficiency in our community. We walk alongside people as they work toward their goals and build a more stable future. We also know that life does not always go as planned. A lost job, unexpected bill, change in benefits, or other challenge can make it harder to get by. Having access to support during those difficult times can help people stay on track and keep moving forward. Supporting people through the bumps in the road helps build a stronger, more stable community for everyone.

In honor of Veterans Day, Tri-Rivers students and career-tech labs will offer a variety of services to veterans as a small token of appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

🏠 Helping a Family Stay Housed

Sometimes, getting help starts with one simple step: asking for it.

One of our clients came to us after an injury left them unable to work. They were worried about paying their rent and keeping a safe home for their family. Our Community Resource Navigator helped them complete and submit an application for emergency assistance. When not having a working cell phone became a barrier, our navigator helped them connect directly with the Marion County Job & Family Services representative handling their application.

With support, guidance, and connections, the client was able to submit the documents they needed and get their emergency funding approved. This helped them keep their housing stable and gave their family some peace of mind.

We know that asking for help can be hard. Finding your way through applications and support programs can feel even harder. That’s why we’re here. 💙

Our team provides caring, one-on-one support to help people find resources and take the next step toward stability.
