Project Crossroads

Project Crossroads A mission where the presence of Christ meets human need in the heart of the Appalachians of southwest Virginia. Harry Howe.

In 1988 a group of local churches through the Marion Area Ministerial Association started an outreach program to address some of the housing needs in Marion, Virginia under the direction of Rev. By the end of 1988, the need for a full-time program to coordinate available resources and church volunteers was realized. In 1989 the program began working with local agencies and was able to do far more

to meet the needs in the community through mutual cooperation between the churches and agencies. The ministry, which began as "Helping Hands Ministry" and serving only Smyth County, grew into Project Crossroads, which was incorporated in 1992. In July 1993, the ministry became a full-time mission with Rev. Harry Howe, also a Church & Community Worker, assigned as the Director by the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Today, Project Crossroads serves the residents of Smyth and surrounding counties year round as volunteer teams come from all over the country to spend a week or more repairing or building homes, cutting and delivering firewood, helping with the annual Thanksgiving meal, and help with emergency assistance as needed. Though the physical work the teams provide is important, the most important work comes as the lives of the residents are transformed as they experience the love of Christ through strangers who become friends.

In the last few weeks we have felt like the postal service of old in that no ice, snow, sleet or rain will keep us from getting firewood delivered. I have failed to post much this winter because we have been all over the service area supplying firewood to our neighbors. As the firewood supply dwindles, we have to thank ROPC, Central Church- Radford, Marion Morning Rotary, Christ Church and some other local volunteers(you know who you are) for helping get more than 100 pickup loads of firewood distributed to families in need. This season we have served 54 families.

Want to help restock? Contact us to schedule a day or weekend to bring in new wood to prep for next winter!

Happy 2026...a few weeks late. Catch up on our happenings with the Winter newsletter.

We spent the morning gathering disaster supply donations across southwest VA. A big thank you to New River District of the Holston Conference (UMC) and Central Church- Radford! These supplies will help serve current needs and help restock the warehouse to bless people in the future.

UMCOR cleaning buckets and hygiene kits make great group projects. There is never a wrong time to make them to ensure we can respond when needed. Instructions are on their website.

We are going to have a sale of gently used and like new books on Thursday, December 11th between one and 5 PM. There are books of all kinds and all genres that have been donated for this fundraiser! All proceeds will go to support the ministries of Mt. Carmel UMC and to Project Crossroads. We are so thankful for how Project Crossroads blesses our community. This is a great way to give back!
