Thank you all from mutual aid we often say it takes a village for a reason we couldn’t be more grateful for the assistance last night. We’re happy to report the family of the home involved are safe and are doing ok. We would like to also thank the public for your support and understanding during this incident. We understand a fire truck blocking your way home or parked in your driveway is a major inconvenience but everyone that came through was very kind and grateful and we appreciate that so much. Please keep the family in your thoughts while you enjoy your memorial weekend and always we’re here if you need us!

A fire started by a lithium ion battery left to charge while the homeowners went to dinner claimed a house, garage and a half-acre of land off Peninsula Drive Friday

On Friday, May 22, 2026, just after 6:00 p.m., the Mariaville Fire Department responded to 266 Peninsula Drive in Mariaville for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the structure fully involved, with the fire spreading into the surrounding wooded area. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to investigate the cause of the fire. No occupants were home at the time of the incident.

Through the review of camera footage, investigators determined the fire originated in the attached garage area and believe it may have been caused by a lithium-ion battery. The fire has been officially classified as accidental.

No injuries were reported. Two cats remain missing at this time.

As we approach warmer weather and boating season, please keep this new rule change in mind.

Wearing a life jacket is a a good idea for everyone, and required by law for some. There is a new PFD age requirement in Maine this year.

Children 12 years of age or younger, including boat operators, must wear a United States Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) while on any watercraft that is underway and being used for recreational purposes.

This change, initiated and passed by the Maine State Legislature, increased the required age from 10 to 12 to improve youth safety on Maine's waters and align with federal law.

Lead by example, and wear your life jacket too. Your safety is just as important to them as theirs is to you.
