How much can a habitat change in 6 months?

With a lot of hard work from our new TREES crew volunteer group, some areas of our preserve have been transformed. Although some of the trees planted haven’t grown very much in a short time, the removal of invasive species and all the grasses and shrubs starting to grow have really transformed some of our sites. A crew of staff, volunteers, and board members spent the afternoon paddling thanks to Scott Stearns and the Marcellus Canoe Club! What a perfect day to be outside enjoying the water, watching kingfishers dive, and catching up after a busy summer.

Our first Sweet Singin’ Cicadas insect netting program was a great success to kick off the month, but we found more than just insects.

We found two species of snake, and neither was the most common find of the area (typically, we find Garter Snakes at Baltimore Woods). Both were spotted by the kids attending the program! First, we found a DeKay’s Brown Snake, and then we found a very feisty little Eastern Milk Snake!

At the end of the program, we searched the milkweed for Monarch caterpillars. Although we didn’t find any living ones, we did find one being eaten by a Spined Soldier Bug! *You might want to avoid the last photo if you are squeamish!*

These stinkbug relatives also eat a large variety of garden pests, including invasive caterpillars like Spongy Moths that you don’t want in your garden. Although we love Monarch caterpillars, this discovery was an interesting chance to learn about how predators eat their prey, which is all a part of natural food webs. Like other true bugs, this species uses a piercing mouthpart to feed.

Welcome to September!

Fall is clearly on the way when we start noticing jewelweed seed pods forming! These pods are like “nature’s bubblewrap” but even more fun. You can squeeze the seedpods to release the tiny green or brown seeds inside. If you find an especially large seedpod, it will burst if you barely touch it, spreading the seeds far and wide. This is an explosive method of seed dispersal. The flowers are also beautiful, and they look a bit like orange or yellow goldfish.

The hickory tussock moth caterpillar is a common sight around Baltimore Woods, and it is often referred to as the “itchy caterpillar” by many campers.

We warn that these fuzzy critters have small hairs that can cause skin irritations when touched, a defense against predators. If you happen to see one of these crawling around on this , remember not to touch them, but to appreciate their interesting adaptation from a distance!

A new 4-part workshop series uniting art, ceramics, and nature is coming soon! Join a ceramic artist in making useful and decorative items in clay using objects from the Baltimore Woods Preserve and take home your durable and food safe creations at the end of the series.

There is a touch of autumn color on the trees, but it couldn't be a more beautiful day! ☀️

Come and enjoy the trails - which are always open dawn to dusk for you to explore. Today you can also stop into the Interpretative Center from 10-4 to enjoy the final day of the photo gallery "Nature Connections: Experiences that bring us joy" and visit with Fern the Wood Turtle and our tree frog exhibit!
