Today was a milestone moment for our program — we released 94 salmon into the Paw Paw River!
What makes this even more special is that these salmon started their journey with us as eggs. Over the past several months, our students helped care for them weekly, learning firsthand about the salmon life cycle, water quality, conservation, and the responsibility that comes with raising living organisms.
This experience reached 40 second grade students and 43 high school students, giving them an unforgettable opportunity to connect science, stewardship, and hands-on learning in a meaningful way. Watching students grow alongside the fish — from tiny eggs to healthy salmon ready for release — has been incredible to witness.
The learning didn’t stop there. Our high school students took the experience even further by building their own fishing poles and then using them out on the water. Bringing together environmental education, craftsmanship, outdoor recreation, and mentorship across grade levels created something truly unique for our students.
This has been a huge dream for our program, and seeing it become a reality today was incredibly rewarding. Opportunities like this give students experiences they will remember for years to come — not just lessons from a textbook, but real-world connections that inspire curiosity, confidence, and appreciation for the outdoors.
We are so proud of every student who helped make this possible and grateful to everyone who supported this journey from egg to release day. What an amazing day on the river!
