What a wonderful celebration of our Star Students and Star Teachers! Manchester High School's Star Student is Madelyn Worsley and her Star Teacher is Ms. Conner Bell; Greenville High School's Star Student is Cortney Murray and her Star Teacher is Mr. Jonathan Murphy, and Flint River Academy's Star Student is Dayton Stephens and his Star Teacher is Mrs. Kay Barnes. The County Star Student is Madelyn Worsley and the County Star Teacher is Ms. Connor Bell. Congratulations to these outstanding students and teachers.
Below is a little information about the Star Student and Teacher Program sponsored by PAGE.
“The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia’s highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development.” After being selected as their high school’s STAR Student, each nominee names their STAR Teacher. Nominees from each high school compete at the system level, then each school system’s winner advances to compete at the region level. The 12 region winners then move on to compete at the state level for PAGE STAR scholarships and rewards.
Our Kiwanis Club has held this STAR Banquet since "PAGE" started the program!

Sheri opened the meeting tonight and gave us an update on the fair and the required wristbands. We are to call her, and she will meet you at the gate and provide you with a wristband!
We were honored to have our Div. 2 Lt. Governor, Wayne Johnson, and his wife attend our meeting and install our Board of Directors and Officers. First, he spoke about our Kiwanis Georgia Governor and his year-long goals. He then inducted our Board of Directors (L-R)
Don Jones, Ronnie Moran, Traci Newton, and Allen Pearson. Jo Moran was inducted as our Club's Treasurer, Carol Lane was inducted as our Club's Secretary, Sheri Jones was inducted as Past President, and Greg Pearson was inducted as our Club President! Our new Kiwanis Year has begun. Dr. Griffin, President-Elect, will be installed at our next meeting by Don Jones.
I'm excited about our new year!!! This year, we will celebrate our Club's 100th Year Birthday.
We need members!!!! We meet on the first and third Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Manchester High School Cafeteria. We are all about supporting our children! Please consider joining! Our children are depending on us. We sponsor the BUG (Bringing Up Grades) and the Terrific Kids Programs at both Elementary Schools, the Builders Club at Manchester Middle School, and Key Clubs at GMHS and MHS. Please come visit us on Oct. 17th. We eat from 6:30-7:00, then deal with any business, and usually have an interesting program from 7-7:30.

Well, the last few meetings have been spent figuring out all the new requirements for the Cotton Fair in Gay, Ga. It just seems to me they want to do away with the food vendors and if they continue the fair, it will be food vendors in self contained food trailers. Just sayin'!

The Manchester Kiwanis Club met on August 1st in the Manchester High and the members greeted an Interclub from The Kiwanis of Columbus Club, Mr. Jimmy McCorlew and Mr. Charles Jarrell. Dr. Robert Griffin, Superintendent of the Meriwether County School System, was the guest speaker. He has been working hard with the Board of Education to make our school system debt free. This is a wonderful accomplishment! This will allow them to do needed improvements at all our schools. It is critical, however, to approve the upcoming renewal of the SPLOST on November 7th. This is NOT a new tax; it is a renewal and when people from outside our county spend money in our county they add to this pot of money! This money will be the money used to upgrade our schools and more. The safety of our students has been greatly increased by our schools having their own School Resource Officer, metal detectors, photo verification entry into our schools, installation of the CASPR system in all schools and buses that kills over 99% of viruses and bacteria from the air and from surfaces, and more. Our Superintendent and Board are doing a great job taking care of all our students and staff. The Club members thanked Dr. Griffin for his informative school system update.

The Manchester Kiwanis Club met on July 18th and Fire Chief Ben Williams and his wife April were guests and Chief Williams was our guest speaker. He talked about the road he traveled to become the Chief of the Manchester Fire Department. In 2021. He is having a hard time finding qualified staff. Many of their current calls are for Comfort Care, which is usually elderly people who have fallen, and they cannot get up even if they have a caretaker. The Fire Department has acquired a used truck which can be seen at certain events with the American flag waving in the breeze high above the crowd. This type of truck was badly needed! They also acquired a Polaris with seats to transport I believe 4 people plus a 16ft trailer to keep it in. This was made possible through a Gary Sinise Grant. In the past they could only respond within the city limits. Through an Auto Aid Agreement, they can now go up to 2 miles outside the city limits with one truck and one person. There are also other Fire Depts., the county and Fire Depts. from surrounding areas involved. When help is needed in case of a big fire, Manchester can get additional help!
There has also been an increase in opioid drug overdose cases. Narcan is not as easy to obtain now since it is being given to addicts for free. However, they do try very hard to have it on hand for those on duty. There is also a problem with some Senior Citizens forgetting they had taken their medication and they take it again.
If you are interested in becoming a firefighter, please contact Chief Williams. It starts with an 8-week training course. Thank you, Chief Williams, for a very interesting program.

The 6u, 8u, 10u and 12u were recognized, and we wish all these teams success as they enter this year's tournaments. We also hope that no one gets hurt and for those teams that have to travel, safe travels!

It was a wonderful time in spite of the heavy rain! We filled the cafeteria with players and their families. Nancy James was honored and recognized for her 40 years of service to the Dixie Youth Baseball Program. Vic Dowis, the former Director and Tangie Filler the current Director of the Recreation Department spoke about all the many things she did. She will surely be missed. Lynda Dyer, Sean Dyer, Jimmy and Daphaney Dyer were Guests of Honor. Part 1
