Join us for an Ag-Focused Career trip to Kirkwood Community College on November 10th! Participants will tour facilities, learn about college programs, and explore a variety of agricultural career pathways.

🍀It’s time for our final 4-H Alumni Spotlight as we wrap up National 4-H Week!!🍀

Roger Helmrichs was an active Delaware County 4-H member from 1962 to 1969, where he participated in Dairy Heifers and Pen of 3 projects.

One of Roger’s favorite project areas was the Pen of 3, and he especially enjoyed analyzing his financial records at the end of each year. His favorite fair memory was preparing for judging day alongside fellow members of his 4-H club, building friendships and excitement as they showcased the results of their hard work.

Through his years in 4-H, Roger developed many valuable life skills, including leadership, discipline, and responsibility.

One 4-H tradition that has remained the same throughout the years is reciting the 4-H Pledge. While many aspects of the program have evolved, Roger notes that one of the biggest changes has been the expansion of non-farm project opportunities, reflecting the decrease in farm families and the growing interests of today's youth.

Roger’s commitment to 4-H did not end when his years as a member were over. He continues to give back to the program as a dedicated volunteer, always willing to lend a hand wherever help is needed. He also serves on the Delaware County Extension Council, helping support and strengthen opportunities for youth across the county.

We are incredibly grateful for Roger’s many years of service, volunteerism, and dedication to 4-H. His willingness to share his time, experience, and leadership has made a lasting impact on our local program and the young people it serves.

Thank you, Roger, for your years of service to Delaware County 4-H and for continuing to invest in the next generation of leaders. We appreciate all that you do!

🍀4-H Alumni Spotlight!🍀

Shirley Helmrichs was active in Delaware County 4-H for 9 years and 2 additional years in the Campus 4-H at Iowa State University. She participated in project areas such as Home Improvement, Clothing, Food & Nutrition, and showed Dairy Cattle.

Her favorite part of 4-H is all the people she has met. 4-H has also taught Shirley many valuable lessons and skills including thinking through her options and to plan ahead. Record Keeping and Parliamentary Procedure has also helped her through the years while serving on many different boards.

Shirley has been a Club Leader for the Milo Livestock for 45 years and has been a project leader for poultry. She also farms and has been a County Supervisor for 28 years.

One tradition that has stayed the same throughout the years is the 4-H motto “To Make The Best Better.”

Her advice to 4-H members is do not be afraid to try new things, step out of your comfort zone, and always help others!

💚Thankful Thursday is here!🍀

Today, we are celebrating the incredible volunteers, educators, mentors, and leaders who make Delaware County 4-H stronger every day! Their encouragement, guidance, and support helps young people build confidence, discover new passions, and become !

A special thank you goes out to all of our amazing club leaders who participated in our Annual Leader Training last week! The time, energy, and dedication they give throughout the year is what helps our 4-H members grow into confident young leaders! Their commitment makes a lasting impact on Delaware County 4-h, and we are so grateful for everything they do!đź’š

🍀4-H Alumni Spotlight!🍀

Ruth Deutmeyer was an active 4-H member from 1960 to 1966, exhibiting projects in Food & Nutrition, Home Improvement, and Sewing.

While Ruth did not have a single favorite project area, the skills she gained through Home Improvement helped spark her lifelong interest in art. Those early experiences encouraged creativity and hands-on learning, which ultimately influenced her future career path.

Today, Ruth is a retired art teacher and has dedicated an incredible 47 years as a 4-H leader. She continues to value the life skills she learned through 4-H, sharing those same lessons with her children, grandchildren, and countless young people throughout her years of service. Ruth credits 4-H with helping her develop practical skills, confidence, and a passion for learning that have benefited her throughout adulthood.

According to Ruth, one of the biggest changes she has seen in 4-H over the years is the opportunity for members to explore multiple project areas each year. During her time as a member, youth typically focused on a single project area, while today's 4-H members can develop skills and interests across a wide variety of subjects.

Thank you for investing in the future of 4-H and for making a difference in the lives of so many 4-Her's!

🍀4-H Alumni Spotlight!🍀

From 2001-2009 Kelly Goldsmith was actively involved in 4-H, exhibiting a wide variety of projects including Food & Nutrition, Swine, Beef, Photography, Visual Arts, Working Exhibits, Share the Fun, and Clothing Selection.
Her Favorite memories were showing swine and enjoying taco salads from the 4-H Foodstand!

Even after her years as a member ended, her commitment to 4-H Continued. Today, she serves as an Extension Council Member, a member of the Youth Committee, Program and Marketing Committee and volunteer during the static judging at the Fair on Mondays and help with the Superior Senior showmanship show on Friday afternoon at the fair.

After spending more than a decade in healthcare administration, she recently took a leap of faith and launched her own in-home bakery, “McAllister Made”, specializing in pies, cookies, cake pops, and more!

There are countless skills she gained through 4-H, including communication, budgeting, food safety, and teamwork. These valuable life skills have served her well over the years and have become even more important as she embarks on her newest adventure!

One tradition she loves seeing continue year after year is the livestock sale and the incredible support our community provides to exhibitors.

Thank you for continuing to give back to the program and for being a wonderful example of how 4-H helps youth develop skills that last a lifetime!

What is a Clover Kid?
🍀Clover Kids is a FUN, youth program specifically designed for children in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Clover Kids experience hand-on learning by participating in activities, games, and other positive experiences. Clover Kids even get to participate at the Delaware County Fair!

🍀🎉It’s time for another Delaware County 4-H Alumni Spotlight!🎉🍀

Carmen Knipper was active in 4-H from 1988 to 1996. During her time in 4-H, she exhibited dairy cattle, beef cattle, and swine. She was also involved in numerous static project areas, including food and nutrition, home improvement, clothing and sewing, needle arts, child development, public speaking, Fashion Revue, clothing selection, Share the Fun, and photography.

Carmen’s favorite part of 4-H was learning life skills and being part of a community. She shares that 4-H is about much more than exhibiting livestock and static exhibits. It is about learning, growing as an individual, and making a positive impact in your community.

Through 4-H, Carmen developed many valuable skills, including cooking, baking, sewing, livestock management, dependability, organization, leadership, citizenship, public speaking, and interviewing skills. These experiences helped prepare her for both her career and everyday life.

Today, Carmen is a Registered Veterinary Technician at Tri-Vet Associates in Dyersville. Alongside her husband, Mark, she helps manage a goat herd, cow-calf herd, feeder cattle operation, and crop farm. She also continues to give back to 4-H by volunteering. Carmen served as leader of the North Fork Kit Kats, now known as the North Fork Kats, from 2015 to 2024, is a member of the Delaware County Youth Committee, and has judged 4-H static exhibits and the Pet Show. She enjoys staying involved in a program that her family has been passionate about for generations.

One 4-H tradition that Carmen feels has remained strong over the years is the sense of community. Giving back has always been an important part of 4-H, and she enjoys seeing clubs continue to support their communities through both service projects and donations. During her time as a club leader, the North Fork Kit Kats organized fundraisers and gave back through donations to the Angel Tree, food pantry, nursing home, and community beautification projects, including flowers for their town.

If Carmen could give advice to her younger self, it would be: “continue to get involved, take the trips to 4-H Conference, and try new project areas.”
