Captain John McAdams Chapter of the DAR

On October 19, 2026, members of the Captain John McAdams Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) partnered with officers of the Madisonville High School National Honor Society (NHS) to recognize and show appreciation for local first responders. DAR members were Shelli Sheppard, Veronica Landmann, Jennifer Figley, Donnie Moore and Delaney Callaham. MHS students were Allison Sanchez, Kit Carter, Jayci Morris, Ava Johnson, Ty Dean and Zane Blakley
In observance of the 2026 NSDAR National Day of Service, DAR members and NHS officers delivered water and snacks to the Madison County Sheriff's Department, Madison County Volunteer Fire Department, and Madisonville Police Department.
This community service project provided an opportunity to express gratitude to the dedicated men and women who work tirelessly to protect and serve Madison County residents. It also brought together two generations of community volunteers in a shared commitment to service and appreciation.
The Captain John McAdams Chapter is proud to partner with Madisonville High School students in honoring our local heroes and promoting the DAR's mission of patriotism, education, and historic preservation.

We will be meeting at the Madison County Sheriff’s Department on Monday, October 19th at 9:00 am for our National Day of Service. Please, mark your calendar. MHS National Honor Society Students will be joining us to help with our donations. After the MCSO, we will then go to the Madisonville VFD at 9:15 am and then to the Madisonville PD at 9:30 am. 🇺🇸🦅🌸

Our first meeting of the year was well attended and informative. The pink is for a special designation 🌸"Cherry Blossom Chapter"🌸that local Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapters can work toward by completing specific community service and outreach projects. 🇺🇸🦅

On this day in 1776, twenty-one-year-old Nathan Hale was hanged in New York City by the British army, having been captured while on an intelligence-gathering mission. A British officer who witnessed the ex*****on wrote in his diary that day: “He behaved with great composure and resolution, saying he thought it the duty of every good officer to obey any orders given him by his Commander-in-Chief; and desired the spectators to be at all times prepared to meet death in whatever shape it might appear.” According to tradition, Hale’s last words were “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

A graduate of Yale, Hale was working as a schoolteacher in Connecticut when the Revolutionary War began. He promptly joined the Connecticut militia and shortly afterwards was commissioned a first lieutenant, going on to become an officer with the Connecticut Continentals and as a member of the elite intelligence-gathering unit called “Knowlton’s Rangers.” When General Washington called for a volunteer to go into New York and try to determine the British army’s next move, Hale stepped forward, knowing that if captured as a spy inside enemy lines, he would be executed.

Hale entered the city in civilian clothes, pretending to be a schoolteacher looking for work. But he was betrayed by Robert Rogers, who saw Hale in a tavern and recognized him. Arrested and condemned to hang, his bravery and patriotism made him one of America’s greatest heroes.

Nathan Hale lost his one life, for his country, 250 years ago today.
