Fred and Nancy Risser already have given a lifetime of service to the Madison community, Fred as the longest serving member of the State Legislature and Nancy as a public school teacher in the Madison Public Schools. But the Rissers aren't done giving back.

They plan to leave a gift to support Madison Community Foundation's Community Impact Fund through their estate so that the Foundation can continue to support the things that make our community great.

For 15 years, the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation carried forward the remarkable legacy of two brothers who deeply loved Madison and believed in giving back to the community they called home. Irwin and Bob Goodman were known for their humility, generosity and quiet commitment to making a difference.

They supported causes ranging from education and athletics to health, wellness and community organizations. Through their Foundation, the brothers’ generosity grew into more than $67 million in investments across the Greater Madison area, touching countless lives and strengthening the institutions that make our community what it is today.

At Madison Community Foundation, we are especially grateful for the Goodman Foundation’s $5 million lead gift that made the Goodman Nonprofit Center possible and will help sustain it into the future. While the Foundation may be closing, the Goodmans’ legacy will continue through the organizations, leaders and relationships they helped build. We are honored to carry a small part of that legacy forward and grateful for all Irwin and Bob Goodman gave to Madison.

We are grateful to the steadfast commitment of E.G. You'll gain a deeper understanding of how legacy giving can strengthen your organization's long-term sustainability and how to serve donors during the largest intergenerational transfer of wealth in history.

Participants will explore the growing role of legacy giving in U.S. philanthropy while learning how to identify and engage prospective legacy donors, why and how donors make legacy commitments, which tools and strategies can help donors achieve their charitable goals, effective ways to promote legacy giving, how to integrate legacy gifts with endowment-building efforts, and how to steward legacy donors to strengthen lasting relationships.

This weekend will mark the opening of the Teejop Community Art Project. The opening celebration will be held Sunday, August 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the UW Arboretum.

The project aims to create public art that will engage with themes developed by Teejop-area Ho-Chunk community members who met for many years to carefully consider the locations and values included in this project.

Seven Indigenous artists were commissioned to develop art installations that honor and illuminate the rich cultural history of Madison as part of the area known as Teejop. The selected artists include Gene Delcourt, Lightning the Earth New Rider, Chloris Lowe, Dakota Mace, Melanie Tallmadge Sainz, Christopher Sweet, and June Whitehorse.

The installations will be at five sites around the community through November, including the Capitol Square, Tenney Park, Olbrich & Hudson Parks, UW Arboretum and Merill Springs. In 2017, MCF provided a $50,000 grant towards this project and it is exciting to see this decade of work come to life this weekend.

A recurring theme throughout the inaugural year of the Goodman Nonprofit Fellowship was the importance of building a trusted community of peers and the need for solidarity among nonprofit leaders.

While the training on key topics of nonprofit management, tailored to the needs of executive directors – the program’s other pillar – was essential, it was the depth of supportive relationships that made the program special. And these relationships clearly were what so many nonprofit leaders are craving and struggling to find.
