DownEast Acadia stretches along Maine’s rugged northeastern coast from Penobscot Bay to the St. Croix River, encompassing an astonishing 2,300 miles of shoreline and more than 5,600 square miles of wide-open space. Within this vast landscape, seven unique travel regions offer their own perspectives on the DownEast Acadia experience, each with its own charm, pace, and sense of place. The Blue Hill Peninsula, home to the working waterfront of Stonington and historic Castine, through Ellsworth, the region's activity hub, to the iconic Mount Desert Island, where Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park anchor a mix of lively and laid-back villages. Heading further along the coast, the Schoodic to Jonesport stretch is a hidden gem passing through Cherryfield, the "Wild Blueberry Capital of the World", and Acadia's Schoodic Peninsula. The Machias Bay region blends history and adventure, highlighted by Roque Bluffs State Park and the Annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival. Inland, the Grand Lakes region offers pristine fresh waters and year-round recreation, while Way DownEast, anchored by Eastport and Lubec, greets the nation's first sunrise and connects visitors to Roosevelt Campobello International Park just across the border in New Brunswick, Canada.

The end of the rainbow is in the Machias River 🌈

After a short rain shower, this beautiful (almost double) rainbow appeared over the river in Machias. The sun was shining and giving the colorful trees a golden glow. What a magical evening in Downeast Maine!
