🦞 If you fish for a living or depend on Maine’s lobster industry, now is the time to speak up.

NOAA Fisheries is gathering early public input on potential future whale-protection measures affecting American lobster and Jonah crab fisheries. No specific rules have been proposed yet.

Fishermen, crew members, families, wharves, dealers, processors, suppliers, and others connected to the industry are encouraged to explain what works on the water and how future changes could affect their livelihoods and communities.

Comments are due October 16, 2026.

My partners in Maine fishing advocacy have collaborated to create the easiest way I’ve seen to understand what is happening around the whale protection issues. There is currently an open comment period on potential changes and it serves us all to be informed and let your voice be heard. Please take the time to review this material and follow the instructions for public comment before the open period ends in October.

An incredible story of two brave young fishermen who saved their captains’ life. We’ve heard a lot across Maine about the challenges of finding deckhands/sternmen. Their story is a great example where fishing with others provided an opportunity to save a life when those unthinkable moments happen….hats off to these two local hero’s!!

When Jay Fiandaca became caught in trap line, Frenchboro brothers Lukas and Hayden Fortin worked together to keep him from being dragged overboard.

We haven’t posted for a while regarding Community Emergency Response Planning, but a lot has been going on behind the scenes. Most importantly Lubec, ME has been our first harbor community to form a team and progress on their plan. They’re just moving from planning and scoping to actions like setting up alerting, defining and stocking equipment kits, defining action steps by scenario, and defining the action team. This has been quite a learning experience for us all and it will definitely help those that plan behind them. A HUGE THANKS TO THIS VOLUNTEER TEAM! Continuing our Pick 3 series, we’re highlighting safety equipment that was demonstrated during the Boothbay Harbor MCFRD ceremony on July 21, 2026. Adopting a slim profile inflatable work vest with a personal locator beacon (PLB) installed, will not only extend the time you or your loved one can withstand the frigid Maine waters, it can also automatically notify your emergency contact, nearby boats, and the USCG that you’re in the water. Seconds matter, this duo will increase the odds of coming home when the unimaginable happens. Green and White Hope is collaborating on a project we hope to formally launch soon to get more of these in the hands of our singlehanded fishermen.
