Rabbi Lori Shapiro doesn’t shy away from the shadow work, the wrestling, the questioning, the parts of ourselves (and our tradition) that don’t come with easy answers.

At Open Temple, that wrestling is the point.

We’ve never believed people fell away from Judaism because of ideology. They fell away because the door felt closed.

So we built a different kind of door, Radical Ritual, Spiritual Expression, even a colorful bus rolling through Venice to meet people exactly where they are.

Whatever brought you here, there’s always a seat for you; you are welcome here.

Send us a DM if you would like to start a conversation, and we will fill in your curiousity from there.

Your sukkah is your personality, so be bold with it. Hang the weird ornament. Paint the pumpkin rainbow. Invite the friend who laughs too loud.

Sukkot Love is happening at Open Temple House all week: dinners, friends, and a sukkah full of personalities (human and otherwise).

Tell us in the comments: what’s your sukkah’s personality? 👇

Want in? DM us and we’ll send you the details.

You crawl inside the Jewish Christmas Tree. You eat in it, sleep in it, make art in it, fall a little bit in love in it. For eight days it holds you, like a womb made of palm fronds and string lights, and you walk out a little bit new.

That’s Sukkot. And we’d love for you to feel it from the inside.

Join us for dinner in the sukkah at Open Temple House:
Mon, Sept 28
Wed, Sept 30
Thu, Oct 1

Bring a vegetarian dish and your Jewish joy. We’ll bring the stars.

RSVP at the link in bio.

At Open Temple’s Creative Torah Academy, Jewish learning doesn’t just happen at a desk it happens through rhythm, movement, art, and a whole lot of imagination. Torah, Jewish civilization, and tradition, taught the way kids actually connect with the world.

This year, we’re taking it to the water.

Riptide Kol Nidre — Rabbi Lori, the Open Temple Band, and YOU, on the sand just south of the Venice Pier as the sun goes down.

Kol Nidre is the prayer that releases you from promises you couldn’t keep. We think it lands differently with the tide coming in.

Sunday evening. Reserve your spot and we’ll send you exactly where to meet us. Link in bio.

So many people come to us carrying the same quiet story: they walked into a Jewish space once and felt like they didn’t measure up. Not observant enough. Not raised right. Not “real” enough.

We want to say this clearly: that feeling was never the truth. Judaism was never meant to be a gate you have to earn your way through.

If you’ve felt this, you’re not alone and you’re not too late, too lost, or too “not Jewish enough” for us.

Tell us in the comments: when did you first feel like you didn’t belong?

We can see the beauty that surrounds us.

It’s in a seagull perched over a skylight. It’s in a wall of books that’s been read and re-read. It’s in the ordinary corners of a room that somehow feel holy when the right people fill them.

Today, for High Holiday Ritual Lab 5787, we’re exploring Magnificent Obsessions — the things we return to again and again, the fixations that quietly shape who we are, and what it means to bring all of that, unfiltered, into ritual.

May this year be sweet, the honey-on-your-wrist kind.

May it be wild the kind that cracks you open instead of shutting you down.

And may it be wide open doors flung, hearts unguarded, room enough for whoever you’re still becoming.

However you Jew, however you found your way to us — we’re glad you’re on this journey alongside us.

L’shanah tovah u’metukah. A good and sweet year, to all of you.
