Sarama Animal Rescue Sarama Animal Rescue rescues, rehabilitates and finds loving homes for animals in need. We take in all breeds, ages and personalities.

Sarama Animal Rescue rescues dogs, cats and small domestic animals in SouthJersey and New York City areas. We believe all beings have a right to live and thrive. All of our rescues are fully vetted including spay/neuter, vaccine, heartworm test for dogs, fiv/felv test for cats, microchipped and treated with flea preventative. Any other health issues or injuries are also taken care of by our caring vets. We work with other rescues and people in the community towards a common goal of making the world a better place for animals. The name of our rescued was inspired by the myth of Sarama, the dog of the gods. Sarama is said to be the mother of all animals and protects them. She also helps to change people view point that animals are a "lesser being". Animals deserve kindness, love and respect just as humans do.

He currently lives with other dogs, kids and cats in his foster home. He’s around two years old, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

He’s currently in foster care in Delaware.

It’s Vet Tech Appreciation Week and we want to give a special shout out to our resident vet tech, Adam, my husband.

Not only does he work full time at a vet hospital as a CVT, he volunteers hours of his free time helping the Sarama animals by showing up to appointments on his days off so the animals have someone familiar, someone they trust holding them for vet visits, he cleans ears, expresses a**l glands, helps groom the animals, nail trims, helps get meds refilled and helps our animals recover after surgeries among many other things.

His full time job helps support the sanctuary as well. Being a vet tech is one of the most difficult jobs and many people don’t realize how much techs do. They deserve a lot more credit than given and honestly a lot more pay for the work they do.

We are so grateful for Adam for always going above and beyond for the clients at his work and for all of the Sarama animals whenever they need help.

Thank you so much, Adam, for donating your time and services to help the animals and for all the work you do as a CVT.

And thank you to ALL the techs that do such an amazing job every day. We appreciate you so much ❤️

$2 Tuesday: Tiny kittens can come with some very big medical bills.

The tiniest animals can sometimes need the most intensive care — round-the-clock feeding, medications, fluids, hospitalization, diagnostics, and emergency treatment.

Sadly, the bills remain long after the kittens are stable and safe.

Our veterinary debt is significant, and paying it down is urgent. Every dollar we put toward that debt helps us get closer to being able to take on the next kitten who needs intensive care.

Ginger and Ed look worried because I told them we are at the bottom of our last treat bag. We are also running really low on food as well for both dogs and cats.

We are currently caring for 12 dogs and 30 cats at our little sanctuary and could really use some help 🙏🏻❤️

The first photo is of Elliot lounging yesterday morning after eating breakfast and going out in the yard.

The second photo and video are of Elliot and the other dogs we rescued in July and August of 2025 when a caretaker became sick and the situation got out of control in her home. She suffered the loss of her husband of many years and then was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She was in hospice when her family discovered she had over 30 dogs in her home living in pretty awful conditions.

We stepped in to help and made sure every dog left to go to a rescue, including 7 that we took into our own rescue.

These dogs needed full medical work ups including for many dentals with extractions and some needed even cardio consults and other diagnostics.

Elliot initially went to another rescue but we took him back when he was struggling behaviorally there. He now lives at our sanctuary and is thriving.

The costs of rescue cases like this are extraordinary. The time and resources needed are much more than most imagine.

And even now we are still caring for Elliot and another dog from this home, Kringle.

We were happy to help though. And we would do it again in a heartbeat. But our intake has been closed for several months, our hands tied and we can’t help anymore animals till we pay down the remaining debt.

Earlier this year we had debt of $70,000. This case contributed to that among many emergencies and unexpected boarding bills.

We are now down to $27,000 and need to pay this down by end of month to avoid costly interest.

Please consider chipping in today to help us continue to help the most vulnerable. We are tagged in urgent posts and asked to help more everyday. Let’s get back to saving lives.

We have gone from 12% to 21% raised of our goal in just a little over 24 hours!

That’s amazing! And we are so incredibly grateful for everyone’s help!

We now need to raise $27,000 more in the next two weeks. This may seem daunting but we once owed $70,000 from emergencies and boarding bills so we are actually very close!

We can absolutely do this and get back to saving lives.

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to our first Book Swap and Bake Sale event yesterday!

We had so much fun seeing everyone, getting updates on adopted animals, seeing the joy on peoples faces when they found books they wanted to read and when they won raffles.

We raised $839 for the animals and we are so grateful! This helps us out so much.

Big huge thank you to our event coordinator Shannon (who is also our assistant director) for all the work she put into this event which included a lot of baking from scratch for the bake sale!

I also want to thank Shawn, Adam and Lauren for all their help setting up and packing up when it was done, Sharon McCart who works for the town of Stratford and help us get the venue for the event, everyone who donated books and raffle baskets and last but not least everyone who showed up yesterday. It was great to see everyone and your support means so much to us.

Kohl tested out his new cat tree yesterday at the sanctuary. He said he approves and we are elated!

We have known Kohl since he was 5 weeks old. He came to us from a cat colony in S Jersey. The caretaker told us his littermates had been killed by a wild animal and he was abandoned by his mom.

Kohl was fearful at first, hissing and spitting. But he came around quickly and became very affectionate.

He was adopted to a home in NY but a few years later we were heartbroken to learn he had been found as a stray on the street, begging people for help.

I drove up to NY to get him and bring him back to the rescue. Though he was up for adoption again, we didn’t have a foster so he was hanging out with our sanctuary cats. Unfortunately he started to show symptoms of multiple health issues. Chronic ear and eye infections, respiratory issues and dental issues. I do think these issue were made worse by stress. We removed him from the general population and gave him a semi private room in my office. He was treated for all his health issues, including a dental with several extractions. While those issues seemed to have resolved , he now has some GI issues and needs to take daily supplements which help. We decided to make him a sanctuary cat due to his health issues.

Kohl is shy at first but very friendly. He has one cat roommate, Gia, who isn’t the easiest to get along with but Kohl seems to have won her over. Kohl also really loves Zippy, a dog who is here for boarding from our friends rescue.

Kohl is almost 9 years old now and will be going to the vet for his annual check up soon.
While I never thought I would still be caring for Kohl 9 years later I am extremely grateful to have him back.
