We had the opportunity to learn from Maggie Thompson of Inclusive Spaces Consulting, and the session centered on the real impact of workplace culture and how it’s shaped every day.

One of the biggest takeaways was that culture isn’t just what’s written down—it’s what gets reinforced. When there’s miscommunication, lack of ownership, unaddressed tension, messy decision-making, or excessive leader involvement, it can quickly become detrimental to a business.

On the flip side, strong culture is clear and intentional. It means:

* Everyone understands how decisions are made
* Communication flows in a consistent, predictable way
* There’s a shared approach to handling conflict
* People know what behaviors are rewarded

At its core, culture is how a team agrees to operate. That includes both formal policies and the informal norms that shape day-to-day interactions. Teams should clearly understand what truly matters, what’s acceptable (and what’s not), and what behaviors will be rewarded, ignored, or addressed.

As a leader, it’s your responsibility to define this. That means creating a foundational document that outlines expectations, communication norms, decision-making processes, and team values—so everyone is aligned and set up to succeed.

For those who don’t know, we lost our longtime ELBA member and friend, Jane Kinsey.

Jane Kinsey was one of our original and loyal ELBA members.

She lived a life defined by independence, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to others.

From her early years shaped by a Naval family during a time of uncertainty, she developed a resilience and adaptability that would carry her through every chapter of her life.

Jane was, at her core, a helper. Whether it was raising her two sons with strength and determination or pursuing her Master’s degree in Social Work while balancing life’s many responsibilities, she demonstrated what perseverance truly looks like.

Her career as a clinical social worker was more than a profession—it was her calling. For decades, she provided guidance, compassion, and steady support to those navigating life’s most difficult moments.

Remarkably, she continued this work well into her later years, never fully stepping away from the people who relied on her wisdom and care.

Beyond her professional life, Jane was deeply engaged in her community. She believed in speaking up, standing firm in her convictions, and working toward a better future for others. Her civic involvement reflected her sense of responsibility to the world around her.

Jane also embraced life with curiosity and adventure. Traveling to nearly 50 countries, she built friendships across cultures and experienced the richness of the world firsthand. These journeys reflected her openness, her love of connection, and her belief that we are all part of something larger.

To her family, Jane was a constant—strong, intelligent, and deeply caring.

She leaves behind not only a legacy of professional impact and civic dedication, but also a family who carries forward her strength, independence, and compassion.

Jane’s life reminds us that purpose does not fade with time, that it is never too late to grow, and that one person’s dedication can quietly change countless lives.

She will be remembered by us, her fellow ELBA members, with deep respect and gratitude.
