On November 23, 1974, The Lincoln Alumnae Chapter was chartered and Deltas began to sponsor activities and programs under the Chapter banner. Charter Members of the of Lincoln Alumnae are Leatrice Bullock, Cora Collins Fisher, Edith Thomas Harvey, Josephine Long Henderson, Annette Hudson, Billie M. Baker Knaff, Doris McCain Lindsey, Erma Stephens McMurray, Dorothy Hayden Porter, Marine L. These wo
men forged ahead with all deliberate speed to plan and execute educational and cultural programs for the Lincoln community. However as circumstances often occur, and due to educational and professional pursuits, by 1976, all except three of the charter members of the Lincoln Alumnae Chapter had moved away from Lincoln. With the small number of Deltas remaining, the Chapter struggled during this period. In the late 90s, as the Lincoln Community was growing in numbers, and, as African Americans moved to Lincoln, more Delta women also began to make Lincoln their home. In 1997, Deltas began the process to reactivate the Lincoln Alumnae Chapter. In the winter of 1998 Lincoln Alumnae was reactivated. Since1998 the Chapter has been visible presenting programs and activities in the Lincoln Community. These activities include:
• Delta academic scholarships to high school graduates going on to attend a four year college or university;
• Community service awards to deserving young women who demonstrate leadership and who actively volunteer in the Lincoln Community;
• Public workshops and presentations on topics such as breast cancer awareness, financial planning, physical and mental health issues;
• Social Action and voter registration programs;
• Skills development seminars for young men and women related to self presentation, self esteem, career and college planning.
• Collaborative sponsorship and support of social, political and service programs with other community based groups and agencies.
• Jabberwock Scholarship Pageant
The rich and endearing legacy of Lincoln Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been framed, chiseled and honed through the leadership of many strong and capable Delta women. The labor, commitment, and sacrifice that have been given over the years since 1974 and into 2016 reflect the historical context of Lincoln Alumnae activities that pave the future for continued and sustained service.
