Lewisburg, West Virginia, the small city held in the soft rise of Greenbrier County, carries its beauty through steady, thoughtful care.

The Lewisburg Foundation’s Membership Program is part of that quiet stewardship. Membership support keeps downtown’s gardens and green spaces tended with intention: the Center Green trimmed, soil nourished, beds watered, shrubs and trees shaped, tired plantings refreshed, weeds lifted, mulch renewed, and bright annual flowers set into the earth each spring and fall.

These touches of care give our historic downtown its calm, graceful presence.

We welcome those who feel connected to this place to join the work. Membership at any level strengthens the ongoing effort to keep Lewisburg blooming.

Celebrating 40+ Years of Caring for Our Town

In 1980, the Lewisburg Foundation was created to help guide the future of our downtown. With the expansion of I‑64 and new retail shifting toward the interstate, our once‑bustling center of pharmacies, grocers, hardware stores and family‑run shops faced big changes. The Foundation worked closely with city leaders and the merchants association to build a plan that would keep downtown vibrant, welcoming and full of life.

More than four decades later, that mission continues. Today, the Lewisburg Foundation operates as a beautification organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the unique character of our historic town. Our work supports regional tourism by caring for the gardens and green spaces that greet visitors at every entrance to the historic district. The charm people feel when they arrive in Lewisburg is no accident — it’s the result of steady, year‑round care.

We maintain gardens throughout downtown and in parks at the north, south, east and west gateways. Our modest annual budget covers mowing, fertilizing, watering, pruning, replacing, mulching, weeding and planting trees, shrubs, turf, perennials and seasonal annuals each spring and fall. As a nonprofit, we are funded by gifts from members, friends of Lewisburg and private foundations. Special capital projects are supported through grants or dedicated gifts, including opportunities for honorary plantings or memorial benches.

If you love Lewisburg’s beauty, we invite you to be part of this ongoing effort. Every contribution — large or small — helps us keep our historic town blooming for generations to come. 🌿✨

The History of the Lewisburg Foundation

In 1980, The Lewisburg Foundation was formed to determine the future of Lewisburg's downtown area. With the expansions of I-64 the once bustling downtown of pharmacies, grocers, hardware stores and more would inevitably change as retail developed adjacent to the Interstate. We collaborated with municipal government and the merchants association to identify and implement a strategy to keep downtown vibrant.

40 years later we operate as a beautification organization focused on creating and maintaining a stunning environment that protects and enhances the unique qualities of our historic town. The Lewisburg Foundation is dedicated to supporting regional tourism by preservation of downtown gardens and entrances to the historic district. Visitors to Lewisburg will find a beautiful and charming downtown, enhanced by it's unique history and artistic community life.

Today, we maintain gardens in downtown Lewisburg and parks in the north, south, east and west gateways to the historic district. The Foundation operates on a modest annual budget which includes mowing, fertilization, watering, pruning, replacing, mulching, weeding and planting of trees, shrubs, turf and perennials, as well as beds of annual flowers each spring and fall. We are a nonprofit organization funded by gifts from members, friends of Lewisburg and private foundations. Capital Projects, which vary from year to year, are funded by special gifts or grants. Gifts can be made to the Foundation for individual naming opportunities and honorary gifts, such as the planting of trees or flowers and the placement of benches.

We invite you to be part of our effort!
