What excites you most about your musical background and the music you play?
What excites us most about the music we play is how collaborative the entire process is! There were only a handful of pieces for our instrumentation when we formed, which meant we had the opportunity to help build the clarinet, voice, and percussion canon. We work closely with living composers and other artists to experiment with sound, workshop ideas, and create music that feels exciting, intentional, and new! Our ensemble has grown alongside the repertoire. And we are grateful that means that our artistic community has grown as well.
Tell us about the pieces you’re excited to play for NMOP!
We are so excited to share a couple pieces that have become staples in our shows, Brendan Sweeney’s “Séance Serenade” and Julia Moss’s “Growing Pains”. Both of these pieces show a very different side of Sputter Box’s musical sound, one more bombastic and one more languid, both very theatrical. As for pieces written by the composers, we are always excited to bring new works to life!
What are you most looking forward to about NMOP?
We are looking forward to having dedicated time to create!
