~NMOP SPOTLIGHT SERIES 3~
Next up in our Spotlight Series, we have a JAM PACKED POST™ highlighting Sputter Box (), featuring Alina Tamborini (soprano), Peter White (percussion), and Kathryn Vetter (clarinet/bass clarinet). Swipe left to see their performance of “I cross” by Aaron Israel Levin at Yerkes Observatory on June 9, 2024 (engineering by Matthew McCabe & Julian Chalon), and continue swiping to see more information on Alina, Peter, and Kathryn along with the full trio’s answers below!

What excites you most about your musical background and the music you play?

What excites us most about the music we play is how collaborative the entire process is! There were only a handful of pieces for our instrumentation when we formed, which meant we had the opportunity to help build the clarinet, voice, and percussion canon. We work closely with living composers and other artists to experiment with sound, workshop ideas, and create music that feels exciting, intentional, and new! Our ensemble has grown alongside the repertoire. And we are grateful that means that our artistic community has grown as well.

Tell us about the pieces you’re excited to play for NMOP!

We are so excited to share a couple pieces that have become staples in our shows, Brendan Sweeney’s “Séance Serenade” and Julia Moss’s “Growing Pains”. Both of these pieces show a very different side of Sputter Box’s musical sound, one more bombastic and one more languid, both very theatrical. As for pieces written by the composers, we are always excited to bring new works to life!

What are you most looking forward to about NMOP?

We are looking forward to having dedicated time to create!

~NMOP SPOTLIGHT SERIES 2~
Next up in our Spotlight Series, we’re highlighting RE:duo (.duomusic), featuring Wilson Poffenberger (saxophone) and Elsie Bae Han (viola) from Stevens Point, WI, and Providence, RI. Swipe left to see their blistering performance of Landscape of Fear (2014) by Marcos Balter, originally for sopranino saxophone and piccolo trumpet, performed on alto saxophone and viola at Bowdoin College on April 19, 2025.

What excites you most about your musical background and the music you play?

Our work centers around collaborating with composers over a long period of time, so that we can have as much dialogue with each composer as possible during the creation of a work. A lot of our repertoire explores extra-musical elements, such as theatre and choreography, that push the bounds of concert music. We love having the opportunity to give these pieces life as we perform them over the course of several years. Our favorite part of the collaboration process is the moment a piece really feels like it’s as much ours as the composer who wrote it.

Tell us about the pieces you’re excited to play for NMOP!

We are super excited to work with and meet new composers at NMOP. Looking forward to digging into participant pieces!

What are you most looking forward to about NMOP?

We’re looking forward to playing and communing with other musicians in nature. We both love hiking, going on soundwalks, and being by water.

We’re so excited to welcome our NMOP 2026 participants next month! As we continue to get ready, we’ll be introducing you to a few of our talented artists through our Spotlight Series. Swipe left to see Skylar’s composition “and there was(n’t) rain” (2026) for String Quartet, premiered February 2026 by the Momenta Quartet.

~NMOP SPOTLIGHT SERIES #1~
Skylar Warren (.rgw); Binghamton, NY; Composer-performer, horn; https://skylarwarrenmusic.com/

What excites you most about your musical background and the music you write or play?

The best part of ‘musicking’ is being along for the whole ride; composing, rehearsing, conducting, listening, performing, recording, etc. I’ve often been the one to premiere my own compositions, and that’s part of the joy! I love performing other people’s music just as much as I love making my own!

Tell us about the piece you’re writing and a piece you’re excited to play for NMOP!

I will be writing for piano and vibraphone, one of our ensembles in residence! I chose this instrumentation because I have been obsessed with Christopher Cerrone’s piece “Double Happiness”. It’s made me excited to try some more minimalist textures, something that lends itself so well to percussion instruments. Additionally, I’ll also be performing a piece for solo horn and fixed media by Kerrith Livengood, one of NMOP’s faculty!

What are you most looking forward to about NMOP?

I mean, I’ve heard amazing things about the food so that’s definitely got me excited! But I’ve heard that NMOP is just music nerd summer camp, and I’m so excited to meet everyone and make new friends!
