I do find this highly coincidental…it doesn’t bring the family of the slain officer any closure I don’t imagine…that is just my opinion.
PRISON INMATE CHARGED IN DEATH OF A CORRECTIONS OFFICER FOUND DEAD BEHIND BARS.
The prosecuting district attorney says:
“This morning’s event displays that God is the ultimate arbiter of justice on Judgement Day, and now His sentence has been rendered.”
HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW:
The Tennessee Department of Correction is investigating the death of inmate Reginald Steed at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.
Steed was pronounced dead at 12:40am on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
No word yet on cause of death.
And no other details released.
BUT, a source inside the prison tells me Steed was moved to Riverbend right after the murder of the correctional officer and put in a Unit 1 Super Max cell alone.
No cellmate.
He was not attacked by another inmate.
Early indications are he died of a drug overdose.
An autopsy will be conducted.
Steed was serving a 27-year sentence for Aggravated Assault, Especially Aggravated Robbery, and Attempted Voluntary Manslaughter.
AND …
Steed was also currently charged with the first-degree murder of Correctional Officer Dustin Pedigo.
Pedigo was killed at the Morgan County Correctional Complex this past February.
Russell Johnson is the 9th Judicial District, District Attorney General who would have prosecuted Steed for that murder.
He issued this statement:

We received information from TDOC Reginald Steed was found dead in his cell at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution this morning.
We notified the wife and parents of corrections officer Dustin Pedigo.
I think there are equal amounts of shock and disappointment in something like this.
Obviously the initial shock at this unexpected turn of circumstances, but also disappointment that Steed will not have to face a jury trial where there certainly would have been a conviction given that the murder was captured entirely on video, plus the numerous letters, phone calls, and statements from Steed stating that he was intending to kill someone.
Also, it was probable that the justice system would have been able to deliver a death penalty in this case given his prior criminal history, the nature of the crime, and the fact that his victim was a corrections officer.
But given time, realizing that it takes 30 years to execute someone in the State of Tennessee, the Pedigo family will welcome this outcome.

Going forward, I reached out to Davidson County District Attorney General Glenn Funk, and he has predicated TBI to handle the investigation into Inmate Steed’s death at Riverbend.
The investigation that TBI was already engaged in involving the circumstances of Steed’s murder of Corrections Officer Dustin Pedigo at MCCX is still ongoing.
