🌿🔪 Did you know archaeologists sharpen their trowels?
It’s true — even the most iconic dig tool needs a little TLC. This snapshot shows our Field School students learning the surprisingly fun art of trowel sharpening. A crisp edge means cleaner layers, clearer soil profiles, and sharper stories from the past.

Hands‑on science with a bit of ✨sharpened flair✨.

🌾 Step Into the World of the First Farmers — This Wednesday!

Join ARI on the trail this Wednesday for our next Summer Hiking Series program:
The First Farmers: The Adena Culture 🌱

On this guided walk, you’ll explore how early communities in the Ohio River Valley used plants, experimented with cultivation, and began the transition toward farming during the Early Woodland period. It’s a chance to think like a scientist, connect with the landscape, and discover how the past continues to shape the world around us.

🌿✨ Hands‑On History: Natural Dye Making

Discover how leaves, roots, bark, and flowers become vibrant, lasting color in this immersive, hands‑on workshop for ages 10+. (Participants 18 and under require guardian approval. Waivers required.)

Using plant materials gathered during our early‑season foraging, you’ll learn to extract, prepare, and apply natural dyes — and explore the science, stories, and cultural traditions behind them. Because we’ll be working with real pigments, expect a little color on your clothes and hands… it’s all part of the fun.

Through guided activities, you’ll dive into:

Traditional dye‑making techniques used across cultures

How natural pigments are processed and fixed for long‑lasting color

The cultural significance of plant‑based dyes throughout history

Responsible early‑season harvesting for craft and survival skills

From the first crush of color to the final dip of fabric, you’ll experience the full journey of transforming raw plant materials into meaningful, usable dyes — and take home creations that connect you to centuries of human ingenuity.

📅 Saturday, June 13
⏰ 10:00 AM–2:00 PM
📍 126 W. High Street, Lawrenceburg

One of our regulars even brought in a mammoth tooth, and yes… it was just as incredible as it sounds.

Come explore local history, learn how to get involved with archaeology, and meet the team that studies and preserves the stories of our region.
