Nicole Noren spent 24 years at ESPN as a decorated producer, earning Emmy, Murrow, and Peabody awards.

But when the company integrated predatory gambling apps into its network, she walked away, boldly declaring, 'I’m not going to have blood on my hands.'"

This is what living by the values we say we believe in looks like.

Just like Big To***co, Big Tech and Big Pharma before them, predatory gambling operators are profiting off human ruin. From targeting addicted gamblers who are $1.5 million in debt to driving up bankruptcies and suicides, the gambling industry has gone unchecked for far too long.

It’s time for our leaders to take action against predatory gambling companies for the harm they're causing Americans, just as we did with other predatory industries. Former FTC senior policy adviser Jon Schweppe put it best:

“They’re isolating customers and psychologically manipulating them to part with as much money as possible… It is time to put the online sportsbooks in the hot seat.”

Wall Street firms have filed for hundreds of single-team ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) that track individual NHL and MLB team season statistics through futures contracts.

Unlike traditional ETFs that invest in productive, revenue-generating business assets, these funds hold zero underlying assets and function as sports wagers disguised behind a ticker symbol.

Because they lack asset backing and reset every season, a team's poor performance directly translates into lost wealth that can break an investor's retirement fund and leave them in ruins. Evan Mills, a financial advisor at Scholar Advising, sums it up best:

“For avid sports gamblers and sports fanatics, their team can already break their heart with a loss. Now there’s a way it can break your heart and break your retirement fund at the same time.”

This week, Stop Predatory Gambling submitted an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in a major case dealing with the spread of so-called "prediction markets.”

In addition to making the case why prediction markets need to be shut down as currently structured, our brief argues the Supreme Court went too far in its Murphy vs. NCAA decision by striking down a provision that directly prohibited private commercialized sports wagering.

We contend, as did the dissenting Court justices, the provision was never itself properly challenged and should have remained in force.

Unlike standard sponsorships where customers receive actual goods, content creators, celebrities, and media figures who accept predatory gambling sponsorships profit directly from their fans' financial losses.

It’s an inherently predatory business model that no one should ever accept, making Linus Tech Tips’s stance the standard everyone else needs to follow:

“With taking a gambling sponsorship you are literally banking on your most hard core engaged users and customers to get dunked on.”

"Its structure requires that any gain comes at another's expense... The question is not merely whether a purchase is legal, but whether it builds anything in us, in our families, or in those around us..."

"I pray that you will not treat gambling lightly."

— President D. Todd Christofferson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on the institution of predatory gambling

In a newly released article published in Bloomberg, well respected columnist and Ivy League professor Gautam Mukunda made a powerful argument that our path forward as a country should begin with cracking down on industries where "ruining lives is the easiest way to make a buck."

In a recent interview Mukunda rightly declared: “allowing online sports gambling nationwide was a catastrophically bad decision and should be reversed.”
