Rain or shine we still met this past Saturday and discussed “Organization Means Commitment.”

What stood out to the group was how the author argued the purpose for a revolution is the evolution of humanity, human beings becoming more human.

In late stage capitalism, it feels we have lost sight of what connects us and how we are all part of a greater collective.
The commitment that is asked of us is time, discipline, loyalty to one another, and to care enough to be willing to change and understand one another. Have any thoughts?

This month at the Free Store in the Park, we’re honoring Día de los Mu***os with a community ofrenda. An ofrenda is a beautiful Mexican tradition that invites the spirits of our loved ones to return home for a visit—a sacred space for honor, remembrance, and love.

Join us Sunday, October 25th at Alondra Park as we honor those who came before us. Shop for FREE essentials like diapers and clothing, get your blood pressure checked, enjoy some elotes, and spend quality time with friends and fam 💜

If organization means commitment, what kind of commitment are we talking about; Time? Loyalty? Discipline? A willingness to change? And where should you draw the line between your commitment to an organization and maintaining your own independent judgement?

With this month’s topic being tools for organizing, join us this Saturday (10/10) to dive into the questions above and more as we read the zine “Organization Means Commitment,” by Grace Lee Boggs.

As always, reading materials will be shared the day of as we read aloud together, no prior reading necessary.

Pages and Powers Recap 📚✊🏽

This past weekend we closed out our s*x work topic by reading and discussing chapter 1 of the book, “Everything for Everyone.” Tying the lessons from this month’s readings together, we realized: everyone deserves protection in the workplace regardless of the “morality” of your job and under the current system we are limited to what we can choose as a career due to our material needs (i.e. will this job help me meet my material needs?).

The chapter we read together last Saturday helped us envision a different future— one where people collaborated to ensure all basic needs were met and how that fundamentally changed that society’s relationship to work. Now, people can choose to work in a field they love instead of settling for something that just pays the bills. This reading also highlighted how the oppression of our current system also stifles human creativity. It’s been noted that it’s often easier to imagine a dystopian future than a utopian one.

Next Pages & Powers Book Club is this Saturday, September 26th📚✊🏼

How does surviving capitalism actually teach people how to build something beyond capitalism? & what does revolution mean: does it mean taking power or building new social relationships?

Join us this Saturday to discuss these questions and more where we’ll be closing out this month’s s*x work theme by reading the first chapter of the book, “Everything for Everyone,” by O’Brien and Abdelhadi. 📖

As always, no prior reading required and the reading material will be shared with the group when we meet.

We redistributed resources to over 50+ community members, received donations from 20+ donors, and had 25 volunteers help assist us at this event!

This week primarily focused on analyzing the concept of work through the lens of s*x work.

Don't all workers deserve protections and rights? And how does our perception of "choice" change when we realize that it is all dependent on your material reality?
Sometimes the particular work you "choose" to do can be your ideal career or the only choice you have available to survive. Shouldn't we be striving to build a world where people are able to choose their career based on the former and not the latter? 💭

From the discussion we agreed that work under capitalism involves unequal power. Now it's time we examine who exactly has the power, who profits, who bears the risks, and what would give us, the workers, greater control over their lives.
