We're feeling energized and uplifted after last weekend's regional Spring Conference. Thank you, Golden West Region, for the memories — both lofty and silly — and for the motivation to keep going. We can't wait to start planning next year's Dream Programs!
(Clockwise from top left: Belen is celebrated as a first-time conference attendee; the Las Cruces delegation, easily spotted by the flowers in our hair; a moment of gratitude for our club president Margo and her leadership this year; and all smiles as Jessica receives her regional award and additional education funds.)

May's dinner meeting was one to remember. Tommy Esparza took the stage to share his journey — the obstacles he faced and the persistence it took to become a Health & PE teacher. His love for his students at New America School, and his dedication to helping them build healthy habits and explore health careers, was truly inspiring. 💪 What does it mean to you to find a career you're passionate about?"

Today, 5/28, is World Menstrual Hygiene Day. (5/28 - The average period lasts for 5 days, and occurs every 28 days.) This year's global campaign theme is "Periods Are Normal – Empower Girls Through Menstrual Hygiene." New Mexico mandates that free period products be available in high schools and middle schools. Our club provides period products to girls at two Las Cruces charter high schools during Winter and Summer breaks to ensure that the girls have what they need when schools are closed. Safe, effective menstrual products are not a luxury, Proper menstrual health management is directly tied to gender equality, dignity, and bodily autonomy.

Period poverty—the inability to afford or access essential menstrual hygiene products—is a major issue in New Mexico, where over 20% of women and girls live below the federal poverty line. New Mexico legislation (HB 134) requires public middle and high schools to provide free menstrual products in girls' bathrooms, all-gender bathrooms, and at least one boy's restroom. The state no longer taxes period products. Gaps still exist and many nonprofit groups -- including SOROPTIMIST -- are working to fill those gaps.

Thanks to the Las Cruces Bulletin for sharing Jessica's story. We are so proud to support women like Jessica as they work to achieve their dreams.
