All New Mexico Search and Rescue teams received an alert this week about the possibility of flash flooding and flood-related emergencies. Friday night, that possibility became a reality when we received a call about a person who may have been caught in flooding near Socorro.

Seven Search and Rescue teams were called out, with volunteers responding from Las Cruces to Albuquerque. Teams began arriving on scene around midnight to assist with the search.

Flash floods are one of the hidden dangers of the New Mexico desert. A thunderstorm miles away can send a wall of water rushing through an arroyo or normally dry wash with surprisingly little warning. Water can rise quickly, carry tremendous force, and sweep away people and vehicles. The place that was completely dry when you drove in may not be safe when you try to drive out.

During periods of heavy rain, stay out of arroyos, washes, slot canyons, and other low-lying areas. Pay attention to weather forecasts and flash-flood warnings, especially before hiking or traveling on remote roads. Never drive across a flooded roadway—you cannot reliably judge the depth of the water or whether the road underneath has been washed away.

New Mexico’s desert is beautiful, but conditions can change quickly. A little preparation, weather awareness, and willingness to turn around can keep an adventure from becoming a Search and Rescue mission.

Fortunantly, this story had a happy ending as the subject was able to make his way out of the flood.

Another successful mission.

A distressed hiker was hot, out of water, and had a phone that was almost dead. Fortunately, they had the good sense to call for help and send us their coordinates before their cell phone died.

The location was on the trail leading toward the Narrows. Our drone team was able to confirm the hiker’s location. Working together with OMTRS and MVSAR, members of our team reached the subject, provided water, and helped them safely off the mountain.

Great teamwork and a good outcome.
