The internet is not a safe place to leave young people unsupervised. That's not fear-mongering, that's fact. Online predators actively target youth. Harmful content is one click away. Cyberbullying can follow kids home. And algorithms are designed to keep engagement high, not to protect wellbeing.

But here's the good news: You don't need to be paranoid or controlling. You need to be aware and involved.

The goal isn't to shield kids from the internet – it's to prepare them to navigate it safely. That requires your involvement.

Let's be honest – the statistics are hard to ignore. The average teen spends 7-9+ hours per day on screens, often while multitasking. That's more time on devices than sleeping, eating, or being with family. But before we panic, let's ask ourselves: What are our kids actually doing? Are they connecting with friends? Creating content? Escaping difficult emotions? Gaming? The answer matters because it changes how we respond.

Screen time isn't the enemy – mindless, unexamined screen time is. Young people need help learning the difference between connection and isolation, entertainment and escape, social engagement and social comparison. This conversation requires vulnerability from us too. How much time do we spend on our phones? What habits are we modeling?

If you work with young people or parent them, this week ask yourself: What am I noticing about their screen time? And what am I willing to change in my own habits first?

While social media is a great connector, it also has some real dangers. In this session, you’ll learn how to use social media in a safe and healthy way. Your presenter is from a local organization called More2Life.

In this video, we break down two very different approaches to raising kids.

🔨 The Carpenter: This parenting style tries to measure, control, and assemble the perfect child. It is a highly meticulous approach that relies heavily on controlling the outcome.

🌻 The Gardener: This approach focuses on creating a safe, nurturing environment where a child can naturally flourish. Gardeners provide freedom within clear boundaries and expectations, giving kids a safe space to explore and grow.

It is all about finding that middle ground between being a ""dictator"" and having a completely hands-off, ""I don't care"" attitude. The ideal approach is authoritative parenting, which provides necessary structure and authority while still allowing room for exploration and growth.

Youth need to know: “It’s okay to not be okay.”

Talk openly about emotions at home, in classrooms, and in programs. The more we normalize it, the less stigma they feel asking for help.

Try asking: “How are you really feeling today?”
