Are we protecting our kids from the wrong dangers? 🤯

In the latest episode of the Baffled podcast, we unpack a massive parenting paradox: We overprotect our children in the physical world (like stopping them from walking to the park alone), but completely UNDER-protect them in the dangerous virtual world by giving them unrestricted internet access.

Join Jonathan and Jason as they dive deep into "The Great Rewiring" of childhood. We discuss the dramatic transition from a play-based childhood to a phone-based one, the very real chemical reasons (like oxytocin and endorphins) why kids go absolutely "berserk" when their screens are taken away, and the 4 hidden harms of constant screen time.

Plus, we share why forcefully removing distractions and letting your kids be BORED might actually be the greatest gift you can give their developing brains.

Want to know the ultimate strategy to help your teen build critical thinking and resilience? (Hint: It involves giving them more freedom in the physical world and stronger boundaries online).

Mind Matters Friday: Youth learn how to handle stress by watching us.

Model healthy coping strategies like:
âś” Taking breaks
âś” Talking about feelings
âś” Practicing self-care
âś” Setting boundaries

You don’t have to be perfect – just real.

Showing them how you manage challenges teaches them they can too.

Mind Matters Friday: Not all struggles are loud.

Some youth won’t say they’re struggling – but their behavior will.

Watch for:
âš  Sudden mood changes
âš  Withdrawing from friends or activities
âš  Changes in sleep or energy
âš  Increased irritability

Early support can make a big difference. When in doubt, check in.

“You’ve seemed a little off lately, I’m here if you want to talk.”

Mind Matters Friday: Let’s make mental health a normal conversation – not just a crisis conversation.

Youth need to know: “It’s okay to not be okay.”

Talk openly about emotions at home, in classrooms, and in programs. The more we normalize it, the less stigma they feel asking for help.

Try asking: “How are you really feeling today?”

You might be surprised by the answer.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Each Friday this month, we’ll share tips to help parents, educators, and youth leaders better support the mental health of young people.

This week’s tip: Start with listening.

One of the most powerful things you can do? Listen. Not respond. Not fix. Just to hear them. When youth feel safe being heard, they’re more likely to open up about stress, bullying, or struggles they may be facing.

Try this today:
âś” Put the phone down
âś” Make eye contact
âś” Let them finish without interrupting

Small moments of connection build trust that lasts.

Teens today face more pressure than ever – from social media, academics, peer expectations, and global issues. While rules and boundaries are important, teaching them how to understand, manage, and express their emotions equips them for life far beyond high school.

Rules guide, but emotional intelligence prepares. Help your teen recognize and manage their feelings – they’ll thank you later.

For over 100 years, every generation got smarter than the last. Until now.

Gen Z is the first generation in modern history to underperform their parents on almost every cognitive measure – from memory and literacy to general IQ. We are offloading our "cognitive heavy lifting" to our devices, and it's coming at a massive cost.

Is technology making us "cognitively lazy"? Share your thoughts in the comments.
