The evidence keeps piling up: One more set of data showing that Ranked Choice Voting gives voters more voice and more choice.

In Washington, DC’s first Ranked Choice Voting primary, most voters chose to rank multiple candidates. Depending on the race, between 62% and 80% of voters ranked at least two choices. Voters supporting less-established candidates were especially likely to include backup choices, allowing them to support their favorite without giving up their voice if that candidate was eliminated.

The rankings also revealed more about the electorate than a traditional choose-one ballot could—showing not only who voters preferred first, but which candidates had broader consensus support.

This isn’t just how Ranked Choice Voting is supposed to work. It is how voters are actually using it.

The Washington, DC Board of Elections has released the cast vote record from its first ranked choice voting primary elections on June 16.

As more candidates leave the race before the primary, early voters may be left wondering whether their vote will still matter.

With Ranked Choice Voting, voters could rank backup choices from the start. If their first-choice candidate withdrew or was eliminated, their vote could count for their next choice.

RCV would also reduce pressure on candidates to drop out over fears of splitting the vote or becoming a “spoiler.” Candidates could stay in the race, and voters could decide.

More voice. More choice.

Michigan voters must act fast if they want to spoil their ballots. Clerks must receive the request by Friday.
