My heart feels especially heavy today as I remember where I was 27 years ago, counseling in the aftermath of the Columbine tragedy.

Seventeen years before that day, I had the privilege of student teaching at Columbine and coaching alongside Dave Sanders, a teacher who gave everything he had for his students and died that day. After the shooting, I was asked to spend the next six months counseling students, staff, and families through unimaginable grief. Those hundreds of hours were my way of honoring Dave and the community that had shaped me.

In the years that followed, more loss touched close to home. After four students at my own school, Green Mountain High School, died by su***de just two years later, I knew something had to change. I didn’t want to attend another student’s funeral. That’s when B.I.O.N.I.C. was born, with a simple but powerful mission: to empower students to notice, to care, and to reach out to those who are hurting.

Last Friday, a friend said something that stayed with me: “It’s amazing how Dave’s life—and his loss—inspired you to start B.I.O.N.I.C., and to think of how many students you’ve helped over the past 21 years.”

Dave, your love for kids didn’t end that day. It lives on in every student who chooses kindness, every young person who reaches out, and every life touched by this work.
