As our Chancel Choir resumes rehearsal tonight, we welcome a new Soprano Choral Scholar to our community, Mina Brooks-Schmidt.

Mina is a soprano from Sitka, Alaska. She is a major fan of opera and storytelling in general, having performed in nearly 40 productions of operas, plays, and musicals. She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University where she studied under Maria Spacagna and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Voice at CCM. She also is passionate about arts access and presents at least one free recital at home in Sitka every summer. When she’s not singing, she loves swimming in cold water, baking, and frolicking in the woods.

As our Chancel Choir resumes rehearsals this week, we welcome back our Alto Choral Scholar, Brigid Mack.

Brigid Mack is a lyric mezzo-soprano from Troy, New York. At UC-CCM, Brigid will be performing as the titular role in Giulio Cesare by Handel. At Purchase Performing Arts Center, she performed both as Nerone and Ottavia in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea. She has also taken on the roles of Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, Hamlet in Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet, Hänsel from Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Third Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, and played Le Prince Charmant in Massenet’s Cendrillon. Young artist programs she has participated in include Classic Lyric Arts, Mozart in the Mountains, and Chicago Summer Opera. She studies at CCM for a Master’s in Opera Voice, and previously attended SUNY Purchase Conservatory for her Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance. Brigid currently studies with Mrs. Amy Johnson.

This week, our Chancel Choir resumes rehearsals, and we are happy to welcome back Josh Turner as our Tenor Choral Scholar.

Josh Turner is a tenor with a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from Northern Kentucky University. Josh participated in NKU Chamber Choir’s United Kingdom tour in May of 2024 and NKU Opera’s production of Trial by Jury as the Counsel for the Plaintiff in Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedic masterpiece. He also played El Dancaïro in the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra’s production of Carmen in March of 2025. In March of 2026, Josh played the title role in NKU Opera's production of Stravinsky's one-act comedic opera, Mavra. Josh has performed at Lakeside Presbyterian many times with Northern Kentucky University’s Chamber choir and was the tenor soloist for the Northern Kentucky Community Chorus’s Come & Sing: Schubert's Mass in G. Josh looks forward to returning to sing with the Chancel Choir at Lakeside Presbyterian as well as with the Northern Kentucky Community Chorus.

Speaker: Chance Mwangomba
Bio: Chance Kenson Mwangomba is a Malawian-born Presbyterian minister, chaplain, and theological student. Ordained as minister in 2013, Chance has served in Malawi (Africa) as a congregational pastor in Salima for five years, a place where his mission was to plant new churches in the area. He also served for another five years as a chaplain for seven Mission Schools (at once) where he also taught Expressive Arts, Religious and Social Studies before moving to the US to study at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. While at the Seminary Chance volunteered at La Escuelita Learning Hub at Beechmont Presbyterian Church where he was also an intern under Rev. Malissa and Rev. Debbie Braaksma before starting his CPE. He did a Clinical Pastoral Education unit at the University of Louisville Hospital. His pastoral identity is rooted in communal ethics, and trauma‑informed care. Chance is completing dual graduate degrees; the Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Religion at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He is expected to graduate in May of 2027.

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus: What Does Discipleship Really Cost? | Matthew 16:21–28
What does it really mean to follow Jesus?
In Matthew 16:21–28, Jesus tells his disciples that his journey will lead through suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter struggles to understand and tries to reject this path. Jesus then gives his disciples a challenging invitation: deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.
Following Jesus isn't simply about receiving blessings or getting the life we want. It is about learning a different way of living—one shaped by love, sacrifice, humility, courage, and trust in God.
Jesus asks us to consider what we are holding onto and what we might need to surrender.
What are we unwilling to let go of? What does faithful discipleship look like in our everyday lives?

Bio: The Rev. Dr. Louisa W. Umphres is pastor and head of staff at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. She holds a BA in History from Duke University, Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Summary
Who is Jesus—and what does our answer mean for the way we live? In Matthew 16:13-20, Jesus asks his disciples the question at the heart of Christian faith: “Who do you say that I am?” Peter responds by confessing Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the living God. But this confession is not simply a statement of belief; it becomes the foundation for a community called to live differently. In Romans 12:1-8, Paul describes what that life looks like: offering ourselves to God, allowing God to transform our minds, and discovering how our unique gifts can serve the whole body of Christ. Together, these readings remind us that faith is both confession and vocation. Knowing who Jesus is changes how we see ourselves, how we see one another, and how we use what God has given us. We are called to become a living, serving, transformed community.
