Sometimes, in rescue, we meet people who remind us why we keep going. People who don't hesitate. People who don't ask, “How old is she?” before asking, “How can I help?”
People who open their homes and their hearts to the dogs who are so often and almost always overlooked! The ones who may not receive even a first look, let alone a second… and almost never the consideration of becoming someone's forever dog.……
And then, there are people like Robin. ❤️
Our story with Robin began years ago, when she stepped forward to foster an 8-week-old puppy who had been abandoned on the steps of an animal hospital in the middle of the night. She intended to foster. And did, a very short time. Because that little puppy, Janie, quickly became a foster “fail”.. and there was no failure about it. Janie went to the home she deserved full of love. And Janie is now 13 years old.
But Robin didn't stop there.
Throughout the years, she later opened her heart and her home to Bella and Luna, two more Save A Bow Wow dogs who were deeply loved and cared for until the end of their lives. Both have since crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but they left this world knowing something every rescue dog deserves to know: They were loved. They belonged. They were wanted. They had a home to call their own.
And now… MISSY. ❤️ Missy is officially adopted. And with that, Robin becomes a FOUR-TIME Save A Bow Wow adopter.
But there's something especially meaningful about this particular adoption. Because Robin chose Missy because she was a senior. Robin knew, seniors are chosen last. Instead of getting a young new puppy, she opted for an old soul that had so much life and love left to give. She drove all the way from Nevada, near the Sierra Nevada mountains, to Whittier, California to bring Missy home. And Missy did wonderfully on her journey back to Nevada..! And when Missy needed someone willing to take on her future medical care, Robin didn't run in the other direction. She stepped forward making sure Missy will receive whatever medical attention she needs. She is caring for her with the kind of dedication, patience and love that makes a rescue's heart completely full. The life and family Missy should have had all along…
This is what adoption looks like. It isn't always about finding the youngest dog. The smallest dog. The easiest dog. The dog without medical needs. The dog with all their teeth..
Sometimes, the greatest act of love is looking at the dog everyone else keeps scrolling past……and saying, “I see you, I know you're older, I know I may not have you for as many years as I wish, But you deserve to be loved for every single day you have left!”
Senior dogs don't know they're senior. They don't look in the mirror and worry about their age. They don't wonder why a younger dog gets all the applications and no ones even inquired about them. They simply want what every dog wants: A safe place. A comfortable bed. A full belly. A gentle hand. A mom like Robin, to call their own. And sometimes, they get lucky enough like Missy to find a person like Robin.
Robin, we cannot thank you enough. You have opened your heart to four of our dogs. THREE of them, seniors and all 4 of them abandoned. You have loved them through different chapters of their lives. You gave Janie her forever home. You gave Bella and Luna a life filled with love until they were ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge. And now you have given Missy the greatest gift of all: A home. A doting loving mother. And the certainty that she will be cared for. Your selflessness deserves to be recognized. Your commitment to these dogs inspires us to keep rescuing on days were exhausted and feel defeated. And your love for senior dogs is exactly what we wish more people could see.
We need more Robins in this world. ❤️
So, if you've ever thought about adopting a senior dog, we hope Missy's story makes you pause and think that you too could make a difference. Don't count them out because of their age.
Sometimes, the dog you almost didn't stop to look at becomes the one you can't imagine your life without. Congratulations, Missy! You found your person. And Robin… you are truly a hero to senior pups everywhere.
