Life with horses really is wild and sometimes I question my life choices but here we are 🫠
Valori came to us from a k*** pen around the end of February, along with another horse who was said to be her son. She was also said to be pregnant by said son. Plot twist, I’ll come back to that in a bit. He was actually named first due to he needed immediate medical care and ultimately euthanasia due to a severely neglected wound on his leg that had been untreated for over a year. The lymphatic system was destroyed by infection and he had such an overgrowth of proud flesh his leg had doubled in size. He was the best boy for the short time he was with us and really touched my heart. We named him Valor, and then her Valori in his memory.
Valori is the complete opposite of Valor and we all joke about her attitude. She’s constantly faking us out and pretending she hates people than loving us the next second lol. She’s fake mean is probably the best way I can describe her.
After the initial rush to take care of Valor, who was only 5 years old, Valori was assessed and found to be 7-8 years old. It’s most likely she was actually his mother. We did draw blood to test for pregnancy and it showed she had low levels and Dr L felt she probably lost the pregnancy way back.
Ok so all that out of the way, now present day lol. A month or so ago Valori walked up to the barn with a massive cut on her leg, the exact same location and leg as Valor’s injury. We searched her paddock and could not determine how she managed to do this but it was rough, she severed a tendon and it was to the bone. Dr L came out immediately and at first she thought we may have to euthanize her but she was walking sound and she authorized us trying to heal the wound vs putting Valori down. The bone is now covered with healthy tissue and then the proud flesh came in seemingly the same aggressive way that Valor’s overtook his leg. It really made me question if this was something genetic in them because of the severity on both. We got the proud flesh under control and Dr L did have to debride some of it but overall Valori is healing really well at this time. I’m so thankful for a vet who doesn’t immediately jump to end a life, as it was important to me to do this for Valori just as we wished we could have gotten Valor sooner and done the same for him ❤️🩹.
