Pocahontas (we call her Poki) update❤️‍🩹

We made it through another day/night. She’s definitely brighter and attempting to move more in the front end but not yet in the hind end, but it’s still very early. Dr Longoria said if treatment works we will just see a slow progression of her moving more, attempting to sit up, so forth. She was so stiff at first it was hard to sit her up but we are able to do so now to an extent and she is drinking milk from a bowl now. She does have an IV and we are giving fluids throughout the day/night. She’s on an antinflammatory, and two antibiotics, as well as Vitamin E and C. I have been doing magnawave treatments and massages to help her muscles relax.

We got a her a twin size air mattress in an effort to reduce pressure and help move her and it’s really been a life saver. She has to be turned every 2 hours and repositioned often. She already had some pressure areas when she came to us from being down at her home so we really want to stay ahead of those. This is around the clock care and I’m just hopeful she comes out in the other side of this 🥹.

We will continued giving IV fluids at intervals throughout the day today. She is MAYBE a little less rigid this morning and is trying really hard to sit up. Because of the rigidity in her hind end it is not advised to try to put her in a sling right now. We are keeping her turned and repositioned. If she survives, this will be a gradual improvement over that next 4-5 days.

We answered a call for a downed foal in need of help. The owner has surrendered her to us as she was diagnosed with tetanus earlier today and he is unable to treat. She is 2.5 months old. Dr L met us back at the rescue after we picked her up and began treatment. She is unable to stand or sit up due to rigidity and would not be able to make the trip to MSU at this time. It’s a 3 hour drive from our Prentiss location and riding down in a trailer that long is not advised. We will do everything we can for her here. Please say a prayer that we can turn this around for her. There’s a 50/50 chance she can survive 🙏.

We need to ask for prayers, good thoughts, and all the love you can send tonight. ❤️‍🩹

We had a 2.5 month old filly surrendered emergently this evening. She is down and very much in a fight for her life.

Dr. L is on the way now, and we are doing everything we can for her while we wait. Right now, we don’t have many answers — just a very sick baby who needs every bit of strength and help we can give her.

I will update as soon as we know more. For now, please keep this little girl in your thoughts. She needs them. ❤️

The little appy mare is so prissy 😂 and the little one has definitely given her something to “mother” since losing her own. She’s quite protective of her little friends.
