Arts for the Schools

Arts for the Schools Arts for the Schools is a 501(c)3 non-profit with the mission is to inspire, teach and build our rural communities through equitable access to the arts.

Founded in 1984 by Terry Yagura, Arts For The Schools was founded to access to the arts for young people, with performing & visual arts programming, cultural learning opportunities, and access to artist excellence for our rural communities and schools. Arts For The Schools sought to address the decline in arts programming in rural schools, one of the unintended consequences of the 1978 ratificatio

n of California's Proposition 13, which drastically reduced education funding statewide. As a result schools in the region now rely on Arts For The Schools to provide arts programming for 10,000 students each year. Today Arts For The Schools programming includes this tradition of presenting performing arts excellence and cultural learning with a host of programs, festivals and workshops, as well as offers visual arts, public arts, advocacy and professional development programs.

Huge thanks to journalist Maria Palma from KUNR for coming out to one of our assemblies and writing such a thoughtful piece about our work. We’re so grateful for the coverage and for helping share the mission of Arts For The Schools with the wider community.

This week, Brandon Greathouse and the entire crew inspired and energized more than 2,000 students across the Tahoe Truckee region through music, dance, and storytelling.

Programs like this remind us how powerful the arts can be in connecting kids to learning, creativity, and each other.

We have an important update for our community.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Artists in Bloom: A Spring Benefit Concert (March 8) has been canceled. Ticket holders will receive a full refund and we will be reaching out directly.

While we were excited to gather, our focus now turns to the work happening in our schools next week — nine arts assemblies across three counties, bringing music, culture, and creativity directly to hundreds of students in our rural communities.

Thank you for your understanding and continued belief in the power of arts education. We are already working on our next community event, and we can’t wait to gather with you soon. Stay tuned. 🌸🎶

Take a look at our latest run of programming: Winter Seasons with Majel Connery

More than 350 of our district’s littlest learners dove into the newest Musical Field Journal, listened to music composed just for them, counted animals, celebrated winter and strengthened their bond with nature.

It’s truly an honor to partner with the incredible educators, administrators and children across the Sierra Nevadas.

Music. Art. Ecoliteracy.

When creativity is treated as essential, not optional, classrooms change.

Students don’t just learn facts. They explore, imagine, and connect what they see in the world to what they feel inside.

Behind every assembly, workshop, and hands-on project is a community choosing to invest in curiosity and confidence for the next generation. The arts have a quiet way of building skills that last far beyond school walls.

If you’ve ever wondered how culture, education, and community intersect, this is what it looks like in action.

“THE SULTRY MUSIC WAS SUPERB WHEN MAJEL CONNERY WAS AIRILY SINGING”        — ZACHARY WOOLFE, NY TIMES
JANUARY 31ST, 2PM AT THE SIERRA VALLEY PRESERVE & NATURE CENTER IN BECKWORTH, CA

Have a scenic Sunday with the family, driving down Highway 89 and strolling through the most beautiful nature preserve, a meer 42 ish miles from downtown Truckee.

Seasons: A Musical Field Journal, composed by Majel Connery (https://www.majelconnery.com/bio) and Illustrated by Em Young (https://www.em-young.com/) is a playful pairing; a concert and journaling experience created especially for young children and the grownups who love them. Through short songs, movement, and imagination, families are invited to explore the sights, sounds, and feelings of the seasons together and put those complex emotions to a curated page, The Musical Field Journal.
Inspired by the Sierra Nevada—its weather, colors, animals, and rhythms—this performance encourages curiosity, connection, and shared discovery. Kids don’t just listen… they sing, move, and participate.

The music and journal are both designed for little bodies, big feelings, and family fun.

With a $35 ticket you get a free Musical Field Journal for your little!
