This is a simple question, but it opens the door to something really important: whether your child feels safe coming to you when things don’t go as planned. Kids and teens don’t always know how to handle awkward, uncomfortable, or unexpected situations on their own. What makes the biggest difference is knowing they have a trusted adult they can turn to without hesitation.

Try bringing this up sometime this week in a natural moment like a car ride or while making dinner. You might be surprised by what you learn, and it can go a long way in strengthening that sense of trust between you and your child.

Before the Fourth of July weekend kicks off, take a quick minute to get everyone on the same page so the fun doesn’t turn into stress later. Set a curfew, agree on a couple of check-in times, and keep water close so everyone actually stays hydrated throughout the day. For adults, it also helps to stay aware in crowded places, know local firework regulations, and of course never drink and drive. A little intention up front goes a long way in keeping things easy, safe, and focused on enjoying the time together.
