Wayward Ranch Animal Sanctuary

Wayward Ranch Animal Sanctuary The Underdog's Last Hope. We provide a quality life to the animals who need it most. Our Mission:

To provide a quality life to the animals who need it the most.

The Dream

Wayward Ranch was founded by three friends who, after working for other rescues for a long time, realized there was something missing from the average rescue model. No animal is perfect, and in the typical shelter system any behavioral concerns an animal had coming in are just exacerbated the longer they are kenneled or caged waiting for a home. Many local shelters have taken to shippin

g puppies up from the south because they are more “adoptable” than the shelter animals we have here. However, this just floods are market and takes homes and resources from our local animals who are suffering as a result. We are committed to a different type of rescue experience. We are a unique combination of adoption and sanctuary facility, taking the pressure of euthanasia away from animals who may not be generically adoptable. We also help our animals thrive, rather than deteriorate, as they wait for forever homes using a combination of enrichment and training techniques. Our Permanent Residents

After watching dog after dog be euthanized in our area’s shelters, simply for small and manageable behavioral concerns, we became drawn to the idea of creating a better option for these dogs and other similar animals of other species. A huge part of our mission is to provide a permanent home to animals who may not be suitable for adoption due to medical or behavioral special needs. These animals are each evaluated and given a personalized enrichment and training protocol for our staff and volunteers to follow. Just because they are with us for life, doesn’t mean we let them sit here and do nothing! We work every single day to make their lives fun, exciting, and productive! Our Adoptable Residents

Most of the animals that come to our rescue are just with us as a stop along their way to their true happy ending. We take in hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, ferrets, rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, goats, sheep, and horses and evaluate them each individually to determine how to best find their forever home. Many animals that come to us need some sort of medical and/or behavioral rehabilitation to prepare them for adoption. This may be a simple as experiencing positive interactions with humans (for the first time in their lives) to build up their socialization. It may mean they require extensive surgery prior to being physical ready for adoption. Regardless of their needs, we strive to meet them for every single animal. Why Kerhonkson? When we founded our rescue in 2016, we began as a foster based rescue in Westchester County, NY. We rescued mainly dogs, with a few cats thrown in on occasion. Almost every single animal taken in the first year was fostered by one of our board members, who also were our only donors. As time went on, and our rescue goals grew larger, we expanded to take on farm animals as foster homes allowed. We realized there were so many more good things we could do if we were not limited by the number of foster homes we had available. When searching for a property to call home, we needed to find a location close enough to the bigger donors of Westchester and NYC, but in a rural area where we could find staff and volunteers who believed in our mission and wanted to work with us. When we found our property in July of 2018, it seemed to be fate. The perfect location. A great community. A stunning property. What more could you ask for? Our Future

As we are still adjusting to life running a farm based rescue, rather than a foster based rescue, we are looking excitedly towards the future! We are moving forward with presenting plans for a kennel facility to our town board and are hoping for their approval. A kennel facility will allow us to rescue more dogs, cats, and small animals without the constraints of available foster homes. We hope to become a large part of the community here in Ulster County, and to help local animals and families more and more as we grow!

Below are some of the dogs that inspired this dream and we will continue to provide a quality life to the animals that need it most in their honor.

This handsome pup has just a few more days left in training before he heads back to the Town of Rochester dog kennels to continue to wait for his forever home to come along.

He is smart, eager to please, loves to play, and also is a pretty fantastic cuddler! He has learned to walk like a gentleman on leash, how to be calm in the house, is solid with his crate training/housebreaking, and has come a long way with his impulse control. All he needs now is a family!

From what I've seen from him I think he has the potential to live with dogs and cats, but with how gigantic he is, I would recommend a slow introduction to cats since he doesn't realize how much bigger he is.

He is also already neutered and up to date on vaccines!

Bunny is located in Accord, NY and please share to help him find the family he has been waiting so patiently for!

It’s been one week since Bunny came to my house for training and to learn a bit more about life in a house after spending so may months in the Town of Rochester kennels waiting to be adopted. He has learned how to walk well on leash, crate training, housebreaking, continues to perfect his off leash recall, and has been introduced to a place command. He also has learned that it is okay to just *exist.*

Many dogs that grow up in a shelter kennel can become obsessive with toys with the lack of mental stimulation that environment offers. Bunny was unable to settle without a ball for the first few days, and would pace, whine, and at times even start rearranging furniture, desperate to be doing something at all times. Now he is able to just lay near me and breathe, knowing even if it’s not always playtime, I will make sure he always gets plenty!

This boy is eager to please, incredibly smart, and so full of love. He’s learned so much and I’d love to help an adopter or foster take him to the next level in his training at no cost! If you’re interested in adopting or fostering him please reach out!

Bunny’s basics:
- About 1.5 years old
- Neutered and up to date on vaccines
- Does fine with my dog and cats through a bay gate but gets very excited when in the same room with them. With slow introductions I think he could live with either.
- he’s a very tall mixed breed, possibly shepherd/rottie mix but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was something like Dane thrown in there for fun either!
- Located in Accord, NY

Please share this amazing pup!

Long time no post! Wayward Ranch closed all operations last year, after finding homes for each and every one of the animals in our care. But you know who still needs a home? Bunny 🐰

Bunny is not a Wayward Ranch animal, but he is currently in training with me for the next two weeks and we’d love to help spread the word that he needs a forever home! This very sweet, gigantic goofball was found as a stray last Easter at just about six months old. Ever since he’s lived at the Town of Rochester dog warden’s kennels waiting for a family to adopt him.

Growing up in a kennel can be difficult for a high energy, intelligent, and playful puppy and he developed some rambunctious habits that aren’t very appealing to adopters. Over the next couple of weeks my goals are to help him learn his basic obedience, find outlets for his mental and physical energy, and show him wha life outside of a kennel is like.

So far he seems dog friendly, very willing to learn, and extremely lovable. I plan to post his progress and would love it if you all would share and help him find his family just like you helped us find families for our Wayward animals. He is located in Accord, NY and may be a shepherd/rottie mix. He is neutered, vaccinated, and I will share more as I get to know him better!

If good things come to those that wait, maybe the best things should come to those who wait the longest. Today Apollo was finally adopted by his true forever family!!

Even though our rescue closed this summer, when Apollo’s adopter needed to return him we made it happen. Supporters donated towards his stay in boarding until he could come to my home to foster, once again on the hunt for the family he’s waited his whole life for.

When he came back to us a part of me was scared. It was so hard to find his first adoptive home, but now without all of the public attention we had on us during closing, could I do it again? With one of my dogs having serious behavioral special needs and my two cats Apollo could not be around safely, I knew I couldn’t keep him myself. At times I would give in to the anxiety and wonder “what happens if no one comes for him?” Or “how long can I put my own animals through the stress of fostering him?,” but I took a leap of faith we would figure it out for him.

I’m so grateful that even after Wayward Ranch closed, our community came through to help him alongside me once again. His new family has followed his story for quite a while, and when they saw he was returned they reached out, and it was clearly a match!

Apollo is now home with a family that will stick by him through anything he needs in life, truly the kind of family that believes in making a lifetime commitment to their dogs. He even has a dog sister who was gracious enough to share her amazing family with him in her golden years (even though sometimes he loves her so much he tackles her 😬).

Thank you to every single person who donated towards his care and shared his story. Thanks to you, the final wayward animal is wayward no more; he’s finally, truly home ♥️

Apollo checking in from boarding. This sweet boy is understandably confused and stressed in the transition from being returned by his previous home through no fault of his own (life happens so please let’s keep the focus on finding him a home and not criticizing his previous adopter) but he’s doing a bit better each day. We are hoping to help him avoid any further transition by finding an adopter willing to commit to taking him home rather than seeking transfer to another organization where he would be even more lost and confused. He will repay you with a lifetime of loyalty and dedication if you give him the chance!

Apollo is scooby doo come to life! He is an absolute love and has a capacity for loyalty that is unmatched. He came to us from the NYC animal care centers where he had been brought as a stray. We fostered him through our rescue for two years before he found a home but sadly it wasn’t meant to be forever and he’s returned.

He’s currently in boarding with a friend in Putnam County, NY and can be adopted within a 4-5 hour drive if there are other dogs in the home (he would need a couple of meetings to get to know them) but a further distance if he would be your only pet. No cats for this guy but he adores humans of any age and has had several dog friends in his time with us at Wayward.

Wayward Ranch is now closed but we will always do what we can for one of our animals in need. In 2023 I met Apollo and promised him I’d make sure he had a safe life and I intend to keep that promise, but I need the help of our community to accomplish that!

How to help:
- share to help his posts get as much visibility as possible! You never know if one of your friends could be on the hunt for a dog just like Apollo!

- consider donating towards his boarding expenses through PayPal ([email protected]) or Venmo ( without any additional letters or punctuation)

- adopt him! You can inquire about adopting him through email ([email protected]) or text (917-783-8330)!

9 years ago today Wayward Ranch Animal Sanctuary was born with nothing but a dream, hope, and a dedication to saving local animals in need. It began with one puppy named Gaia and over the years we went on to save 550 animals of many species. This year we sadly closed and set out to do the impossible, rehoming every single animal in our care. Still, our work is not yet done.

Apollo’s adoption unfortunately did not work out through no fault of his own when his owner was unable to keep him. We never turn away one of our animals in need, so we once again are working to find Apollo an adopter, this time forever!

Apollo is an adult pit bull/mastiff mix who loves people of all ages! He also loves dogs with a slow introduction to them but is not a fit for a home with cats.

Apollo loves to be with his people and makes a fantastic road trip copilot, movie marathon buddy, and best friend. He is goofy, loving, and loyal, so we know his dream home must be out there so lonely without him!

Please share Apollo and help him find a home! Located in New York (currently in boarding in Putnam County). If you are able to contribute to his boarding expenses we would so appreciate it! PayPal [email protected] or Venmo (without any additional letters or punctuation).

Interested adopters can email [email protected] or text 917-783-8330 with any questions!!

Alright Wayward community, we have tough news…Apollo’s backup adopter is no longer able to take him. This sweet boy waited for years for a home, and now that our rescue is closed it will be even harder for us to find him a new one but we never turn our back on one of our own!

Apollo is an adult pit bull mix who weighs about 80 lbs. He is crate trained, loves people (even kids!), and could live with another dog as long as they got along well at the meet and greet! No cats for him though. He has a benign skin condition that is well managed with inexpensive daily medication and I would happily cover the cost of for life if an adopter needed.

Apollo at one point was shot by a BB gun, found himself at the NYC Animal Care Center where we met him, then waited years to find a home with us. He finally found what we hoped was his forever home this summer but when his adopter was unable to care for him any longer (please no negative comments towards his previous adopter, life happens and the priority is on finding him a true forever home) he has come back to us through no fault of his own. Our rescue operations are now closed and while we stand by our animals no matter what, we have lost several avenues to help find him placement and we cannot keep him ourselves. Social media and shares are now his best chance to find a new home.

Please help us share to get his story out there. Anyone interested in adopting him can email me at [email protected] or text us at (917)-783-8330 with any questions! This sweet boy is already feeling lost and confused, we want to make sure he goes through as little transition as possible on his way to forever.

Apollo here, reporting from boarding! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far to allow me to stay somewhere safe and sound with people I know while I wait for my new family to be ready for me at the end of October.

We are all so grateful to our community for continuing to help us stand by our commitment to make sure every animal who came through our rescue will have our support as they need it!

If you’d like to donate towards his boarding expenses you can do so through PayPal ([email protected]) or Venmo (make sure it’s EXACTLY to avoid potential scams).

Once a Wayward animal, always a Wayward animal.

Our operations are closed and all of the pets in our care were rehomed but sadly sometimes life has other plans and we will never turn away one of our animals in need! Apollo has spent several months experiencing the love of a true family for the first time in his life. He has thrived but sadly his owner is unable to care for him and he has returned to our care.

Apollo luckily already has a potential home ready to adopt him (thank god otherwise we’d be far more stressed!) but they are unable to take him home until the end of October so we need your help to fundraise for him to stay in boarding for the next several weeks. With our facility closed and emptied out this is the only way we can help him have a safe landing before heading to the next step in his life. Luckily a good friend of ours who has boarded Apollo previously had an opening and could take him in to her home for boarding without him having to go to a kennel!

If you are able to donate towards his boarding expenses, please do so through PayPal ([email protected]) or Venmo .

With our operations closed we have no funds left without your help! We won’t turn away one of our animals in need and are hoping our community will feel the same because we can’t do this without your help!

Note: please no negative comments about his return, this was no fault of Apollo’s or his adopter’s. Unfortunately life gets in the way and the kindest thing that could be done for Apollo at this time was to welcome him back to our care to rehome him once again. If his adopter was able to keep him they would have and we will not tolerate any disrespect towards them in what is already a painful time. Thank you for your support and understanding!

Delta and Charlie are the final two Wayward Ranch animals looking for a forever home! Our rescue has closed, the rest of our animals are either in their new homes or simply waiting transport to get there, but I refuse to loose faith that the home they’ve been waiting for is right around the corner!

Delta and Charlie have been with our rescue awaiting adoption for over two years now, arriving with their mom and siblings when they were just a few months old. They have watched their family and friends all find their homes and it is their turn!

They will be 3 years old in October and both girls are spayed, microchipped, utd on vaccines and are sweet and social. Delta recently had surgery to remove a bump on her back and we are still waiting on the best results to tell us what the lump was and we will update their postings as we know more. They are litter box trained so could adapt to a new home indoors or outdoors. As long as they get to stay together they aren’t picky!

If you are interested in adopting them or are a sanctuary willing to provide them lifelong placement please reach out to us! [email protected], (917)-783-8330, or submit an application directly at waywardranch.org

Please help us boost their posts by sharing, liking, and commenting. Social media is of course not the only way we are working to network them for adoption but it is so very helpful in getting the word out and making new connections for the animals!

Wayward Ranch is closing in July and we continue to push to find homes for our remaining animals, posting them every day until they find placement! Our Golden Gang is made up of Dolly the alpaca and her pigs Betty, Bertram, and Bernard and they are looking for an adoptive home or sanctuary placement where they can stay together as the bonded group they are! Today we are putting the focus on Betty Boop, a pig that is basically just a cartoon come to life.

Betty Boop is a middle aged pot belly pig and came to us with chronic eye infections from a hoarding situation where she was very overweight due to neglect. After a successful weight loss program she is looking and feeling her best and the weight loss has also taken pressure off of her eye lids, minimizing her risk of eye infections coming back. Occasionally she may need a follow up round of antibiotic eye ointment but she's had consistently healthy eyes without needing treatment for at least the last six months or so. Behaviorally she is very sweet, social, and outgoing and absolutely adores being the center of attention! She follows us around the pen while we clean, demanding scratches and cuddles whenever possible.

Learn more about this crew and apply to adopt them at waywardranch.org!

PLEASE help us share their story to find them the home they need!

We are committed to posting our animals still in need of homes every single day until they find placement as we work toward closing in July. Even if you are unable to adopt, you can help us find them safe placement by sharing their posts, tagging sanctuaries you know to see if they'd like to help, or tagging friends who may be able to adopt them!

Today we're talking about Bernard, the absolute best pig ever! He is in a bonded group with his pig friends Betty and Bertram and their alpaca buddy Dolly. This crew came to us from a hoarding situation where they were left in pain without the veterinary care they needed so badly. With love, care, and medication they are now thriving and we just know they are the missing piece from someone's home or sanctuary!

Bernard is a middle aged pot belly pig with front limb arthritis. He is well managed on daily gabapentin and has also done with with adequan injections. Behaviorally he is a saint! He loves to be cuddled and loved on and is always ready to be the little spoon for a nap. When you meet him, you'll understand why we say he's the best pig ever, so message us today to set up a time to meet him and his friends to see if they're perfect for you!

Learn more about this crew and apply to adopt them at waywardranch.org!

PLEASE help us share their story to find them the home they need!
