Today, we honor the life and legacy of Nina Kalen, one of Willow’s original “ABW Divas,” who passed away on August 18 at the age of 94.
Nina was part of the remarkable group of women who helped shape Willow in its earliest days — women of extraordinary spirit, generosity, and determination who believed survivors deserved safety, dignity, and a community that would stand beside them.
Her connection to Willow was more than a place in our history. Nina was part of the foundation this organization was built on. The work we do today is possible in part because women like Nina saw a need in our community and chose to act.
Even now, Nina’s generosity continues. In lieu of flowers, her family has asked that donations be made to Willow — a deeply moving reflection of her enduring belief in this work and in the people we serve.
As we remember Nina, we also celebrate the countless lives touched by the women who came before us. Their vision lives on every time a survivor reaches out, every time a child finds safety, every time an advocate answers the phone, and every time we remind someone: you are not alone.
May we continue to carry the torch Nina and the original Divas lit so many years ago.
