From a young age, we think that once we grow up, we’ll have it all figured out: who we are, what we want, what we believe, how to handle things, etc. But the older we get, the more we realize life is messy. Nothing is as straightforward as it seems. Not friendships, not the future, not the news we read or the reels we scroll online, not the decisions we’re making about all these things. Not even following God. Growing up doesn’t always bring clarity. Often, it actually brings tension, waiting, fear, and doubt.
In Genesis and Exodus, we see that God’s people felt the same way. They wandered, worried, doubted, and messed up. Again and again. And yet God didn’t just give them a foolproof plan or show them all the answers. He gave them himself. He stayed close in the mess, showed up in the uncertainty, and kept moving with them, even when their trust was shaky at best.
The good news is this: we don’t have to have everything figured out to follow God. Questions don’t disqualify us; doubt doesn’t mean failure. God doesn’t wait for people to have it all figured out before he works through them. Instead of giving us a test and expecting us to have all the right answers, God gives us his presence and expects nothing other than that we’ll accept it as a gift of grace.
Over the SERVE week, we’ll be invited to sit in the truth that faith is complicated, and that’s a good thing. Because life is complicated. And God meets us in the thick of waiting, confusion, messiness, and uncertainty, promising again and again: “I myself will go with you.”
