Grand Rapids Round Table

Grand Rapids Round Table We are a small local service club with membership primarily in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our club has been in continuous existence since 1926.

We are part of a larger organization of the International Knights of the Round Table founded in 1922 in Oakland CA We count it a privilege to contribute to a better life for the people of our community and the broader world. Our annual Service Fund Campaign is designed to raise financial support for three local charities. The local Round Table meets on the first and third Thursday of the month at

noon. Occasionally we will do a site visit to a special place. ***Currently we are are not having in person meetings due to COVID-19 Restrictions.***

All of our meetings feature an educational or current event talk, and camaraderie in a relaxed setting. Membership is open to any male or female based on character and congeniality rather than professional or commercial classification. Our Motto: “We Who Seek to Serve Others Best Serve Ourselves.”

I want to thank our Oratorical contest coordinator, Henry Smitter, for leading another successful contest. It was inspiring and educational to hear our high school senior contestants orate on the topic ‘What should be done about our nation’s growing debt’? These two students were given $2,000 and $1,500 scholarships to attend the college of their choice.

This is an update about the efforts of our Grand Rapids Round Table to publicize our efforts for recognition among business and thought leaders in Grand Rapids of this Service Club formed nearly 100 years ago right after the ending of our nation's first Progressive Era of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Like other Service Clubs formed at that time (Rotary, Lions) the Loyal Knights of the Round Table was formed to re-emphasize that loyalty to one's country and fellow man was worth dying for. Just as King Arthur's knights of old swore allegiance to their country, so the knights of Grand Rapids Round Table are dedicated "to devote our lives to loyal service to public duties; participation in elections; guiding youth by counsel and example; upholding rights of public assembly, free speech, religious freedom, and public education; and teaching fair play". We do this with adherence to our motto of "we who seek to serve others best serve ourselves". We have not been able to meet the past year, but are starting our first in-person meeting April 29 with a program dedicated to helping our members and public learn more about our elections and their importance in our community. Come and learn with us at this event at the University Club April 29 over lunch.
