Please safely remove all turtles well off the road in the direction they were headed.

Watch out for baby turtles!!!

I found these two newly hatched snapping turtles trying to cross the road on their way to the lake. Female turtles can travel surprisingly long distances from their watery homes to lay their eggs, which means that once the hatchlings emerge, they have to make the journey to a body of water they’ve never actually seen before!

Please slow down and keep an eye out for these tiny travelers.

The glowing adult fireflies we see on summer nights represent only a short chapter of their lives. Depending on the species, fireflies may spend many months to around two years as larvae, often living in soil, leaf litter, or other moist places while feeding on small invertebrates such as snails, slugs, and worms.

That makes the ground beneath our feet part of firefly habitat. Broad-spectrum pesticides, excessive lawn chemicals, removing leaf litter, and destroying damp habitat can make survival harder for them. If we want summer nights filled with those tiny lights, protecting them has to begin long before the adults ever start glowing.
