Scott Rasmussen’s article looks at religious liberty through both history and the present day. Beginning with an 1838 example of a military leader who refused to carry out an unlawful order against members of the LDS Church, Rasmussen considers what it means to protect the freedom of people whose beliefs differ from our own. He also explores questions of safety, belonging, and whether Americans may have more common ground on religious pluralism than we realize.

Religious freedom is often misunderstood.

It is not about giving one group special treatment, protecting only majority faiths, or creating distance between neighbors. At its best, religious freedom protects human dignity, freedom of conscience, and the ability for people of many beliefs — and no religious belief — to participate in public life with respect.

🇺🇸Independence Day invites us to reflect on the freedoms that shape civic life in the United States.

As we mark 250 years of freedom, we remember that liberty is not only a national ideal, but a daily responsibility. 🗽

Among these freedoms is religious liberty: the right to live according to conscience and faith, without government favoritism or unfair treatment.
Religious freedom protects people of many beliefs, including the freedom to believe, not believe, worship, gather, speak, and participate in civic life with dignity and respect.

What a wonderful evening celebrating freedom, community, and America’s 250th! 🇺🇸✨

Our friends at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did a beautiful job bringing the community together for the Celebration of Freedom Block Party at Marietta Square. The turnout was fantastic, the performances were full of talent and heart, and the whole evening was a joyful reminder of what can happen when neighbors gather in a spirit of gratitude, service, and celebration.

We’re especially grateful for the many volunteers, performers, families, and community members who helped make the night such a success. The JustServe service project was also a meaningful highlight — thank you to everyone who participated and helped turn celebration into service.

We’re grateful to celebrate alongside friends and neighbors who value faith, freedom, service, and community.

FORR is pleased to share this invitation from our friends at The Temple in Atlanta.

On Friday, June 26, The Temple will host “Civic Engagement and Our Shared Future,” a fireside chat and dinner presented in partnership with the Democracy Defense Project. The gathering will take place following Shabbat services and will bring together former elected officials and civic leaders from both major parties for a thoughtful conversation about civic engagement, election confidence, and how communities can continue talking across differences with respect and purpose.

Featured speakers include Saxby Chambliss, Drew Ferguson, Roy Barnes, and Shirley Franklin.

We believe that stronger communities are built through open dialogue, shared civic responsibility, and opportunities to learn from one another.
