"The Lord My Banner" musical follows the story of Esther but focuses on the covenant God who always keeps His covenant.
He is our warrior God, our sword and shield who goes before His people; He represents them, and fights on their behalf. He is Jehovah
Nissi-the Lord our banner. This name of God
originates in the book of Exodus, when God defends His people against the Amalekites (who attack the weakest and most
vulnerable among them)
and makes a covenant vow to
completely blot out the name of Amalek form under heaven.
At the time of Esther, God's peoplethe Jews in Susa—were living outside the Promised Land, and many had assimilated into Persian culture. In Susa, the ancient spiritual and physical war between the Amalekites and Israel resumes
climax. The story's main villain, Haman a direct royal descendant of Agag, the Amalekite king, seeks to finish what Amalek started: the total erasure of Israel. God providentially elevated Esther, a displaced orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, to the Persian throne to save the Jewish people from annihilation. If Haman's empire-wide genocide had succeeded, the Jewish people would have been wiped out, and the promised Messiah could not have been born. By turning Haman's plot back on his own head, God proved His covenant faithfulness to His people.
The musical ends with the message of the gospel. King Xerxes, the king of Persia, could not undo the deadly decree that has been signed by his ring, but he allowed Esther and her cousin Mordecai to write a life-saving decree of their own and this foreshadows a momentous event, relevant to each and every one of us. Each of us have sinned and broken God's law; but at just the right time, after the irrevocable consequences of sin entered the world, God issued "a counter-decree of life" through His son, Jesus. The reversals in Esther's story point forward to the greatest reversal Christ accomplished at the cross. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says that Jesus who was righteous became sin for us so that we who were sinful could become the righteousness of God in
Now, not only is Christ a banner for His followers, but He calls us who are His followers to be His banner-representatives of who He is here on earth. We are called to represent His character
—His holiness, justice and love to a watching world. There is soon coming a day when He will defeat all evil and injustice once and for all; and at His name every knee will bow, of those in heaven and on earth, and every tongue confess that He is Lord (Phil. 2:10-11). Until that day, He calls us to live for Him, and raise high the banner of His name. There is no time to waste.
The time is now.
The musical draws inspiration from Psalms 20:5-8: "May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God...The Lord gives victory to His anointed. He answers them from His heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of His right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God"-Jesus.
