The county got back to me about the mosquito fog’s ingredients; Kontrol 30 30. This is a mix of 30% Permethrin and 30.0% Piperonyl Butoxide along with 40% inert petroleum distillates. Beyond Pesticides determined a mass monarch mortality event was caused by similar chemicals at the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary. I don’t know what the solution is. But this isn’t helping monarchs.

The mass mortality event of monarch butterflies in California yet again shows how pesticides threaten pollinators and biodiversity.

Get to know a native plant: Showy Milkweed

Showy milkweed is native to the Western US and common along the Truckee River. It grows well in full or partial sun and can be found in fields and disturbed areas, including the sides of roads and along irrigation ditches. It’s also a beautiful choice to add to your yard. It can grow up to 6 feet tall and produces clusters of pink star-shaped blossoms between April and September.

If you’ve heard of milkweed before, it’s likely because of its importance to the Monarch Butterfly. Milkweed contains toxins that are poisonous to many plant-eating mammals, birds, and insects, but not to the Monarch! By eating milkweed, Monarchs become distasteful or poisonous to predators.

Join One Truckee River at our Spring Seed Swap on Sunday, April 26th in Lake Park and pick up free Showy Milkweed seeds. RSVP at onetruckeeriver.org/events
