We write you with the disturbing news that the home monastery of Mahasi Sayadaw in the village of Seikkhun in upper Burma was recently attacked in airstrikes by the Burmese military junta, resulting in several casualties and causing severe damage to the compound.
Seikkhun is the birthplace of Mahasi Sayadaw U Sobhana (1904–1982), one of the most influential Buddhist meditation teachers of the twentieth century. His teachings helped transform the practice of vipassana, or insight meditation, from a discipline largely associated with dedicated monastic practitioners into an accessible method that could be undertaken by ordinary laypeople.
Our own lineage is rooted directly in the method, teaching, and lineage of Mahasi Sayadaw, most directly through the guidance of Sayadawgyi U Pandita, who trained both Steven and Michele, and through Sayadaw U Lakkhana who was our anchor in the Kyaswa Monastery in the Sagaing Hills of Upper Burma for many years. As many of you know, Steve ordained as a monk with Mahasi while in Burma and Michele cooked for him while he taught in Barre, Massachusetts.
But Mahasi's influence is much deeper and broader than any of us can imagine. There are very few "mindfulness-based" meditation programs in the West that do not owe a significant part of their existence to his dedication and teachings.
Out of our gratitude to this heritage, we feel responsible to offer assistance in the recovery efforts of the center, to aid the families of the victims devastated by the loss of life and destruction of the community.
We believe that western Dhamma practitioners have a special karmic debt and opportunity to honor and care for this particular place that is the wellspring of our modern lineage, and we ask your support today in helping this important place recover with the aid of our honoring generosity.
