Community, creativity, and a whole lot of pumpkin guts! We had a blast hosting the Pumpkin Carving Contest at Leaves in the Loop last weekend.

Whether it’s rolling up our sleeves to dissect a sheep’s brain at Summer Camp or to scoop out pumpkin seeds at a community festival, Sierra STEM is all about keeping local kids curious and connected through fun, hands-on experiences. We loved seeing local families come together to play, create, and connect right here in the June Lake Chamber of Commerce

Huge thanks to June Lake Little Loopers, an annual Juniper-level Friends of Sierra STEM sponsor of Sierra STEM, for making community days like this happen. Thanks to the volunteers, participants, and families who came out, and a special thanks to our guest judges for selecting this year’s top creations! Little Loopers Non Profit

Our Executive Director, Dr. Neal Fox, will be moderating an expert panel about a messy 💩 but important topic at this year’s WRMC Wilderness Risk Management Conference Management Conference in Portland this month. Check out the amazing panel and the abstract below!

There are few topics so underdiscussed and so relevant to as many wilderness and student travel programs as this one. Come for the real-world tales from the field; stay for the expert advice on managing norovirus outbreaks, emerging and changing wilderness first aid protocols, LNT and disposal issues, cultural considerations, and youth-specific challenges.

If you’ll be attending the conference, please reach out! Neal and Claire, our Operations Director, will both be in attendance and would love to meet up!

What kinds of incidents or issues would you want to learn about during The P**p Panel?

Panelists:
Jose Gonzalez of Outward Bound USA
Nadia Kimmel of Desert Mountain Medicine
Paul Dreyer of Where There Be Dragons

Moderator:
Neal Fox of Sierra STEM

✨ Sierra STEM is a finalist for Nonprofit of the Year! ✨

We are so humbled to have been nominated. Members of the Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce can vote for us and for the amazing businesses and nonprofits in many other categories starting this week! đź’š

Read our commendation here: “Sierra STEM sparks curiosity through affordable, hands-on science and outdoor education programs. In 2026, it expanded from June Lake into Mammoth Lakes to serve more local children with high-quality summer camps and school programs. Sierra STEM inspires and challenges Mammoth’s next generation, one dissection and backpacking trip at a time.”

This summer’s Coaster Camp was a wild ride!

Campers put science into motion as they explored acceleration, momentum, and friction through the thrills of riding and building their own roller coasters! From big drops to fast turns, students got to experience these STEM concepts and feel them come to life in an unforgettable way.

A huge thank you to Woolly’s Adventure Summit for hosting us and to Sierra Summit Photography for capturing all the fun! 📸🎢💙

This camp was made affordable by Mammoth Lakes Recreation through Measure U funding, and by Town of Mammoth Lakes + Mammoth Mountain + MMCF through generous grants and in-kind support 🤩

Thank you for making STEM learning fun and accessible for local kids!

Sierra STEM middle schoolers in our Sports Medicine Camp took their learning to the next level with a hands-on exploration of the brain. Students dissected sheep brains to identify different regions, explore their functions - one standout moment was discovering the olfactory bulbs, the part of the brain responsible for our sense of smell. Labs like this bring STEM to life through new hands-on experiences and opportunities.
Thank you so much to the following organizations for their generous support of Sports Medicine Camp Mammoth Lakes.

Sierra STEM is grateful to June Lake Arts, a Jeffrey Sponsor, for supporting our mission to provide experiential outdoor education to local and visiting kids.

June Lake Arts provides cultural enrichmentment to the Mono County community by supporting emerging local talent and enlivening the artistic spirit in the Eastern Sierra. Specifically, June Lake Arts is a significant support of Sierra STEM’s popular STEAM Camp by introducing students to master artists who enhance the artistic side of the science-based curriculum. With their generous support, Sierra STEM is able to offer high-quality, low-cost summer camps, such as our STEAM camp, where campers can experience the natural world through artistic eyes.🎨
