This week, 11th grade students from Silicon Valley International School embarked on a backpacking trip through Hetch Hetchy with Sierra STEM while conducting their own scientific research. Students developed field investigations, exploring topics such as wildfire impacts on soil pH, the effects of dams on carbon storage and carbon footprints, and documenting natural and cultural resources significant to Indigenous communities. Beyond the research itself, students left with a greater sense of connection to the landscape and a firsthand understanding of why these places matter.

That is a wrap on Friday Night Science Club until we begin again after summer programs! We are excited to run The Club again in June Lake, Lee Vining and Mammoth Lakes starting in September 2026! We are actively looking for funders to support this program that keeps kids engaged in fun STEM nights throughout the whole year. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Mammoth Lakes, we recently spent an afternoon with some Mammoth Elementary School students during Ski P.E. exploring avalanches with hands-on models. Students made hypotheses about the conditions under which different “types of snow” would experience an avalanche and they measured and recorded their findings. We love bringing place-based labs out to our local students, inside or out!

Our pH Lab is a great way for students to understand more complex chemistry through hands-on science experiments. This lab uses high-tech tools to better understand that not all liquids are equal!

In 2025 we started a new tree measuring study here in the June Lake Loop. Visiting and local students have the opportunity to measure Jeffery Pines to see how the stands of trees grow annually. We think it is a great way to support a student-created database and have the kids contribute to science in a tangible way.
