The Inyo National Forest is reopening and there’s still some time to get out into the backcountry! Do you know how to “Camp Like a Pro”?

Always keep in mind the principles when you’re backpacking or even just day hiking!

1. Plan ahead and prepare.
2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
3. Dispose of waste properly.
4. Leave what you find.
5. Minimize campfire impacts (be careful with fire)
6. Respect wildlife.
7. Be considerate of other visitors

Also, you can download the Eastern Sierra Camping app for interactive maps of where dispersed camping is permitted, up-to-date info on fire restrictions, and Camp Like a Pro tips. You can plan your trip at http://essrp.org/camping.

Thanks for doing your part to keep our public lands open and accessible!

“On Wednesdays, we wear pink.” – Gretchen Wieners, Mean Girls

In the heart of Mono Basin lies the strange and majestic Mono Lake, a vast inland sea nestled amidst the 13,000-foot peaks of the High Sierra to the west, the ancient volcanic Bodie Hills to the north, rolling oceans of sagebrush to the east and the towering cinder cones of the young Mono Crater volcanoes to the south.

Check out how well Friends of the Inyo is maintaining the Rush Creek Trail! One of Mammoth Lakes Recreation's Adopt-A-Trail success stories in the June Lake Loop!

Why does Stewardship Director Alex Ertaud look so happy in this picture? Because he got some help last week tending to our "baby": Rush Creek Trail, which FOI adopted through Mammoth Lakes Recreation 's Adopt-a-Trail program! The help he got was from Rose Warner of the Student Conservation Association. Rose is a junior at the University of Florida , where she is studying plant biology in the hope of becoming a botanist. She is part of a crew working with the U.S. Forest Service - Inyo National Forest until November, and we got her on loan to help Alex brush back overgrown foliage to make the trail more enjoyable for all. Thank you, Rose!

Going camping? Do you know if campfires are allowed where you’re going? On the Inyo National Forest, campfires are currently NOT allowed in dispersed areas, such as the Mammoth Lakes Scenic Loop (pictured).
