For World Food Day, Hand, Heart + Soul Project is celebrating the people who help make food access possible every day.

From food pantry teams and farmers to school nutrition staff, community health workers, case managers, faith communities, volunteers, advocates, and neighbors, this work happens because people show up.

Food access isn’t created by one program alone. It grows through relationships, trusted information, practical support, and community.

Food access is about more than having enough to eat. It is part of the infrastructure that helps communities thrive.

It connects to children’s learning, family stability, health, workforce participation, and the ability to plan ahead.

Tomorrow is World Food Day, and we’ll be reflecting on the local people, partnerships, and solutions helping make food access possible every day.

Because strong communities are built around access.

We’ve been talking about the federal-to-state pipeline and how decisions in Washington can eventually affect food access in Georgia.

But it isn’t a one-way path.

There are opportunities to act at every stage: advocate with Congress, push for accessible implementation, identify barriers, share trusted information, and speak honestly about what’s working.

Understanding where change happens helps us understand where we can help create it.

Navigating public benefits isn’t always easy.

Not everyone has reliable technology, language access, extra time, or the confidence to figure it out community along. Community navigators help bridge that gap. They can be found in nonprofits, food-access organizations, faith communities, health centers, libraries, schools, and neighborhood groups. They help people understand what they’re receiving, find the right resource, gather documents, and take the next step.

As policies and funding structures change, supporting trusted local organizations is one way to help information reach people in practical, respectful ways.

When people talk about SNAP, the conversation often centers on two questions: Who qualifies? And how much assistance will they receive?

Those questions matter. But there’s another part of the equation that deserves attention: how SNAP is administered.

A family can qualify for help and still encounter barriers when renewal notices are unclear, documents are difficult to submit, wait times are long, or information isn't available in accessible formats or the languages people use at home.

That’s why Georgia’s October funding transition matters.

As the state takes on a larger share of SNAP administrative costs, there is an opportunity to invest in systems that are easier to navigate and more responsive to the people they serve.

At Hand, Heart + Soul Project, we believe communities should have a voice in identifying what works, naming what needs improvement, and advocating for clear and responsive systems.

Most Georgians have not heard about the federal-to-state SNAP cost shift coming in 2027. The Hand, Heart + Soul Project wants to change that because communities that are informed are communities that can act.

Proposed federal changes would shift significant SNAP costs to states, creating pressure that could narrow eligibility and access for Georgia families. But there is still time to advocate for protections that limit that harm.
