OpenAI is bringing out a new model it calls Astra that it says rises to the level of a true artificial intelligence, known in the industry as "General Artificial Intelligence" (AGI).
According to CEO Sam Altman, the company has "not quite" achieved AGI yet, but once it does (2 years?) the model will "think" like a person and do everything that a human could.
We're not just talking about specific skills. OpenAI is talking about the ability to think and reason the way a person could. Research chief Mark Chen says his company is "80% of the way there." Greg Brockman went further, saying that this latest development may be remembered as the moment AGI was created. Some, like Nvidia's Jensen Huang, have been saying the industry cracked AGI in March.
But these predictions are measuring different things. For instance, Huang's bar is an AI that can build and run a billion-dollar company.
Bottom Line: the OpenAI charter says its goal is to create an AI that 'outperforms humans at most economically valuable work.' Not scary at all!
None of these models will launch soon. For now they live inside OpenAI and Nvidia.
