The Jackson redistricting hearing was the last opportunity for Mississippians to come and speak out about some state lawmakers attempting to redistrict maps in a way that is reminiscent of the past, diluting Black voting power.

People all over the state have spoken:

There is no need to cause Mississippi taxpayers to pay millions more to redistrict in the middle of the decade, when it traditionally happens every 10 years.

Drawing new district lines that don’t represent the people in those communities is wrong.

This isn’t just about drawing lines. This is about POWER. Fair maps affect everything from school funding and healthcare to roads and the local laws that govern us.

Fighting for a better state IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE! And we won’t stop here.

Many Mississippians feel the state's decision to redistrict mid-decade and make taxpayers pay for the millions it will cost is a rushed, costly attempt to keep Mississippi as red as possible. Many Mississippians are not hiding the fact that it feels like a trick from an old playbook. For all Mississippians to thrive, the state must push forward, not make its residents stumble backward.
